PIRATES Tracy talks winning before first workout

Pittsburgh hasn't had a winning record in 13 years.
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- New Pittsburgh manager Jim Tracy stressed winning in his speech to the Pirates before their first full-squad workout on Wednesday. This to a team that hasn't had a winning record in 13 years.
"I think the foundation is there in terms of what we want to try to accomplish," Tracy said of his hour-plus introductory talk with all 62 players in a cafeteria at the team's complex. "If you were in there and paying attention, it should be pretty clear to you, the direction that we're headed."
Tracy didn't specify the nature of his conversation, but he used the word "winning" several times when describing it in a general way.
"You have to understand what it takes," he said. "You have to be able to understand what it takes to be a winning player and be part of a winning situation."
1992 last winning year
Pittsburgh was 67-95 last season and has not had a winning record since 1992.
After the speech, the Pirates took the field for their first full-squad workout, all players having reported. The session covered more than two hours and included pitchers throwing mounds for the first time.
Among those making initial appearances at camp were first baseman Sean Casey and outfielder Jeromy Burnitz, Pittsburgh's two big offseason acquisitions.
Casey returns home
For Casey, a native of suburban Pittsburgh, it represented a homecoming of sorts.
"I'm just glad to be out on the field with the Pirates," Casey said. "Seeing all the guys out here and getting ready to play baseball, it really hit home."
"For a guy like me, it's really not that big of a deal because I've been on a lot of teams," Burnitz said. "Every year, you hear the same thing and we all have high expectations. I'm proud to be in any major-league uniform, honestly. I'm looking forward to doing a good job for this one."
