Grants to train youths for the building trades



The grants help young people 16 to 24 train on the job.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Way Station of Columbiana County, Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority and Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority have been awarded Department of Housing and Urban Development Youthbuild grants totaling $1.46 million to help high school students complete high school and train for careers in building trades.
The Way Station received a $400,000 grant to train 30 youths who will rehabilitate 10 transitional housing units and five single-family homes.
Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority will train 20 young people and rehabilitate one home with a $362,450 grant. HUD officials said TMHA has operated the Youthbuild program since 1995. Major partners include Trumbull County Job and Family Services, Warren city, Home Depot, Western Reserve Building Trades Council and Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas.
Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority will train 36 at-risk young people and construct two single-family homes with a $700,000 grant. Major partners include Youngstown State University, Mahoning Valley Homebuilders Association, Center for Community Empowerment, Mahoning Columbiana Training Association and Youngstown City Schools.
The grants are part of $5.8 million nationwide awarded nationally through HUD's Youthbuild program. The funding will help young people 16 to 24 receive their high school equivalency diplomas and receive on-the-job training in the building trades.
