Boardman's super sophomore advances to state in two events



CLEVELAND -- Boardman sophomore Conner O'Halloran will compete in next weekend's state swimming tournament in an individual race and as part of a relay squad.
The second half of this weekend's district event will be competed today at Cleveland State, beginning at noon.
O'Halloran took fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22 seconds flat.
The top 24 advance to the state meet, four as automatic qualifiers and the rest as at-large competitors.
O'Halloran was also a part of the Boardman 200 medley relay team that took sixth place (1:40.58).
Also on that team were Chad DeAngelo, Brian Worhatch and Mike Barringer.
No other area swimmers earned an automatic trip to the state meet, which will be held next week at Canton's C.T. Branin Natatorium.
Boardman racked up 58.5 points to stand in seventh place, far behind University School (136.5).
Canfield was in 19th place with 18 points.
With the girls' meet at the midway point, no athletes have earned a state berth.
The highest finisher was Julia Gregos of Warren JFK, who took 12th in the 50 freestyle (25.61).
Kristine Mann of Howland placed 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.28) and the Canfield 200 medley relay took 17th place (1:56.89).
Boardman was 19th in the same relay (2:01.71).
Katie Henson of Boardman took 21st in the 200 IM (2:23.15).
