YSU's errors costly

The Penguins committed too many turnovers against UW-Green Bay.
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team shot the ball very well Thursday night, but the Penguins didn't take care of it very well and that was the difference.
YSU committed 24 turnovers, which the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay turned into 31 points that led the Phoenix to an 81-69 victory in a Horizon League game.
The Penguins (7-18, 3-11 Horizon) shot 57.4 percent from the field, hitting 27 of 47 shots, and out-rebounded the Phoenix, 33-23, led by 10 from sophomore Jessica Schloemp.
But the turnovers were the difference as the Penguins had nine in the first half and 15 in the second half, while Green Bay finished the game with just eight.
YSU led only one time
The Penguins led only once in the contest, and that was early in the first half when senior Ashlee Russo scored a conventional three-point play to put her team ahead by 6-5 with just over 18 minutes left.
The Phoenix (19-5, 11-2) then went back on top for good on a 3-point goal by Amanda Popp.
Popp's shot sparked the Phoenix to a 17-5 run that gave them a 22-11 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
The Penguins kept Green Bay within reach the rest of the half, which ended, 44-34.
Godfrey's 18 are high
Freshman Monique Godfrey, who led the Penguins with a career-high 18 points, opened the second half with a 3-point goal, one of four treys on the night for YSU; and Russo followed with another as YSU pulled to within five, 46-39. But that was as close as they would get.
Godfrey was 7-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
Green Bay, which had 23 points and nine rebounds from Nicole Soulis, extended its lead back up to 10, 55-45, and took control of the contest with an 8-2 run to lead, 63-47, with 10 minutes remaining, its biggest command of the night.
Gaudiose, Russo help
The Penguins also got 15 points from junior Kristy Gaudiose, while Russo finished with 12. Gaudiose also had five assists and four rebounds.
Michelle Holmes contributed eight points on 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the foul line, while Schloemp chipped in with six points.
Popp added 13 points and Kati Harty 11 along with six steals for Green Bay, while Rachel Porath and Kayla Groh each had nine points..
YSU on road Saturday
The Penguins will continue on the road in Wisconsin for a Saturday matchup against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 8 p.m.
YSU then will close out the regular season next Thursday at home against Loyola at 7 p.m.
