Who: YSU (7-16, 4-9) vs. Detroit (12-14, 6-7).When: Today, 7:05 p.m. Where: Beeghly Center.Radio/TV: WNIO-AM (1390); WYFX FOX 17/62 (tape delay at midnight).Coaches: Jerry Slocum (7-16) is in his first season at YSU and his 31st season (587-341) overall; Perry Watson in his 12th season is 239-154 with the Titans.
Series: Detroit leads 14-2 and won the first meeting this season, 68-63, in Detroit. Last season, the Penguins picked up a 59-55 win in Youngstown that snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Titans. YSU's only other win in the series came in 1988, 67-63 also at Beeghly.
YSU starters: Quin Humphrey, 6-4 junior guard (19 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists); Keston Roberts, 6-4 junior guard (15.2, 3, 1.9); Derrick Harris, 6-2, senior guard (8.1, 3.5, 5.6); John Barber, 6-6 sophomore forward (7.8, 5.2, 1.2); Jack Liles, 6-8 freshman forward, (3.1, 2.6, 1.5)Detroit starters: Brandon Cotton, 6-0 junior guard (17 points per game, 1.9 rebounds per game, 3.8 assists per game); Ben Green, 6-4 senior guard (5, 2.8, 2.5); Jon Good, 5-10 sophomore guard (11.4, 4, 2.3); Chuck Bailey, 6-7 senior forward (10.2, 6.1, 1.7); Torvoris Baker, 6-7 senior forward (9.4, 7.3, 1.6).
Game notes: The Penguins have dropped four straight, the last two on the road in where they were beaten soundly by UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay in back-to-back losses. Humphrey continues to lead the Horizon League in both scoring and rebounding and just recently went over the 1,000-career point mark becoming the 30th player in YSU history to do so. Detroit has won two of its last three contests, including a 70-66 victory at home against Wright State. Brandon Cotton, who missed three games with an injury has returned to average over 20 points a game in his last seven contests for the Titans. Cotton missed the first contest against YSU in Detroit.
Next up: The Penguins go back on the road Saturday when they travel to meet Canisius in the ESPN Bracket Buster game at 2 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y. It will be the first meeting between the teams since 1941.
