Kershaw helps Liberty defeat Champion 68-59



The Leopards won the rebounding battle 39-17.
CHAMPION -- Six-foot-4-inch senior Ed Kershaw poured in 30 points Tuesday to lead the Liberty High boys basketball team to a 68-59 victory over Champion.
The Leopards (12-5, 9-2) scored 23 points in the first and fourth quarters in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Kershaw sank 11 of 13 free throws and had 12 rebounds for Liberty, which won the board battle, 39-17.
For Champion, Katrell Jones, a non-starting 6-0 junior, had a career-high 18 points. His previous best output was six. This is Jones' first year of organized basketball.
Also for the Golden Flashes, Mark Jackson added 16 points while Markel Vaughn had 11 points, including 7 of 7 at the line. Jackson also had eight rebounds.
Newton Falls 60, Brookfield 55
NEWTON FALLS -- Brookfield's 40-38 lead at the end of the third quarter slowly evaporated in the final period when Newton Falls outscored the Warriors, 22-15.
Junior forward Matt Dillon had 20 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter for Newton Falls, which offset Brookfield's victory in an earlier meeting between the teams.
Josh Harkulich equaled the game-high 20-point output for Brookfield.
Lordstown 54, Badger 37
LORDSTOWN -- Zach Sutliff had 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter in the Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Sutliff converted 10 of 12 free throws to help the Red Devils, who beat Badger earlier in the season, 46-22. Sutliff, a senior, is averaging 80 percent from the foul line.
Senior Brandon Wickline added 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the winners.
Ty Brothers was Badger's top scorer with 10 points.
