Humane Society to sponsor national event

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

LEAVITTSBURG -- The Humane Society of the United States is sponsoring a national day of simultaneous house parties and a nationwide conference call Feb. 26 to bring together activists interested in animal welfare, specifically that of farm animals.
One of the house parties will begin at 5 p.m. that day at the home of Lisa and Dave Kana, 6088 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg.
It will be among nearly 180 parties in 45 states in the society's "Party Animals" program, which is patterned after the house party model used in the last presidential election.
Other Ohio parties will be in Euclid, Wickliffe and Hamilton.
At 7:30 p.m., all parties will join in a conference call with Michael Markarian, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund, among others.
The parties will raise money for the fund, which is the society's lobbying arm.
The fund works to pass humane laws and stop what it says is unnecessary suffering among farm animals.
It is working on local, state and federal legislative initiatives to combat what it calls the most abusive practices in agribusiness.
