WARREN -- A 19-year-old city man who accidentally shot and killed his baby brother in early December has been indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury on three charges.
David E. Young, of 421 School St. N.W., is charged with involuntary manslaughter and unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance, both felonies, and using weapons while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
A blast from a shotgun Young was handling penetrated a wall and hit the baby, Adam Gunter, 7 months, of the same address, in the abdomen as he slept in his crib, police said.
The baby was taken by his parents to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, then moved to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead later the same day.
The involuntary manslaughter charge carries a penalty of three to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000. Unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance carries a six- to 12-month jail term and up to a $2,500 fine.
Detective Michael Krafcik said Young went to TMH after the shooting and said he was responsible. Police took him to the station and arrested him. Police had checked "yes" in a box labeled "alcohol influence" in the arrest section of the report.
Young was released after posting a $100,000 surety bond. He will be arraigned Friday before Judge Peter Kontos.
Other indictments
Also indicted Wednesday was Keith E. Gunther, 46, of 714 3rd St. S.W., who is charged with aggravated robbery, felonious assault and failure to comply with the orders of a police officer in a robbery at Macali's Giant Eagle on Vienna Avenue, Niles, on Jan. 3.
According to police, Gunther was stopped by the manager while leaving Macali's shortly before 6:30 p.m. The manager accused him of not paying for four steaks.
Police said that after they were called, Gunther pulled a knife, a scuffle followed and Gunther and the manager suffered hand cuts.
Before police arrived, Gunther fled in a car. Warren police picked up the chase, which ended when Gunther crashed into a pole on Mahoning Avenue in Warren.
Gunther is being held in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
Another indictment went to Calvin Clark III, 22, of 2002 Union St. S.W., charged with aggravated robbery with a firearm specification and two counts of felonious assault with firearm specifications.
Warren police said Clark and two other men robbed a 28-year-old Swallow Street man of his pants and money at gunpoint behind the victim's house on Oct. 30.
A police report states that two of the victim's friends were shot at as they pulled into the driveway of the Swallow Street residence, and four bullets struck the vehicle. No injuries were reported.
He is being held in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 cash or surety bond.
