MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County residents without prescription insurance could be eligible to receive a discount on their medications through the National Association of Counties.
At their chief clerk's meeting Tuesday, county commissioners said they will pay the $2,584 annual fee to join the organization because it is offering a drug discount of up to 19 percent to those who live in member counties.
The discount would be available to any family without drug coverage, and the greatest discount would be available to those who order drugs by mail. Commissioners had let the county's membership in the group lapse to save money but have decided to rejoin because of the drug benefit. They will give details of the program as soon as it becomes effective.
Also, commissioners said they will fax a statement of support to Lawrence County Commissioner Chairman Daniel Vogler to be read at a citizens rally Saturday in New Castle in support of the proposed Bedford Downs racetrack. The proposed racetrack location is in Mahoning Township off U.S. Route 422.
The New Castle Branch of the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People is sponsoring the rally at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cascade Galleria in downtown New Castle. The rally is intended to let the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission know their opposition to the commission's recent decision to deny a license for the project.
