YOUNGSTOWN -- The woman found dead in Mill Creek Park over the weekend has been identified as Michele Givens, 42, of Youngstown, according to Mahoning County Coroner David M. Kennedy. The coroner said a preliminary investigation revealed no apparent signs of foul play. The cause of death is pending completion of the investigation. Givens was found Saturday morning.
Burning candlesblamed for fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- Candles left burning in a bathroom at 830 Coitsville Center started a fire that spread to the hallway and did around $6,000 damage, the fire department said. No injuries were reported. The fire was reported around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
Hearing reset for youthheld in death of cousin
YOUNGSTOWN -- A preliminary hearing on a murder charge for 17-year-old Raymond Sykes of Cameron Street has been reset to March 2. The hearing had been scheduled for Monday in juvenile court. Sykes is accused in the shooting death of his cousin, Billy Ray Mayes Jr., 15, who was found inside his mother's Ohio Avenue home Feb. 6.
Boardman attorney Robert J. Rohrbaugh II said Sykes would be permitted to leave the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center today to attend his cousin's funeral. Rohrbaugh has said the state filed a motion to have Judge Theresa Dellick relinquish jurisdiction and have Sykes' case transferred to common pleas court, where he would be tried as an adult. The lawyer called the death a tragic mistake, not murder.
Gunman takes cash
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who went to a Madison Avenue apartment to get a haircut pulled out a gun, fired one shot into a kitchen cabinet and left with about $85 in currency and $20 in coins, reports show. The residents told police that the suspect first tried to sell them a gold ring late Sunday night and grabbed the money after they declined. Police have a description of the suspect.
Monopoly fund-raiser

NASA lab open to public
YOUNGSTOWN -- The public can get a look at the NASA Mobile Aerospace Education Laboratory visiting the Alpha School of Excellence for Boys, 2546 Hillman St., this week. The lab provides hands-on activities related to the exploration of space and will be open to the public from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today and from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
Health and safety expo
YOUNGSTOWN -- Volney Rogers Junior High School, 2400 S. Schenley Ave., will have a Family Health and Safety Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, offering general health information, a blood drive and a raffle. More than 30 agencies will be on hand with displays and demonstrations.
Recycling site open
LISBON -- People may bring aluminum cans, newspapers, plain paper and cardboard to the Columbiana County Career & amp; Technical Center for recycling. The recycling center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month from September through May. Glass or plastic items are not accepted. Signs will direct people to the area where students will help unload the material.
