'Spectacle of Speed' project lines up 31 sponsors

The project will raise funds for local arts and cultural organizations.
WARREN -- All sponsors have been lined up for the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County's public art project, "A Spectacle of Speed."
Spectacle of Speed is designed to increase community spirit, promote the arts and raise funds for local arts and cultural organizations. The idea is modeled after similar projects in other cities, such as Chicago's Cows, Cleveland's Guitars and Youngstown's Penguins.
Spectacle of Speed features an icon that promotes Trumbull County's heritage with the automobile: the Goddess of Speed, a hood ornament available on the Packard car from 1926 to 1950.
This hood ornament is being transformed into statues measuring 6 feet tall by 8 feet 6 inches long. The statues will be made of fiberglass and transformed into works of art by area artists.
A total of 31 sponsors have been secured for the 31 statues. Sponsorships cost 3,000.
A call for artists is now being conducted. Interested artists may download the application at www.TrumbullArts.org. The postmark deadline for artists applications is Jan. 5.
Picking an artist
Sponsors will have the opportunity to select their artist at a sponsors party set for Feb. 1. Sponsorship underwrites all costs associated with creating the Goddess of Speed statues into works of art. Sponsors will be acknowledged on a plaque that will be permanently affixed to the completed statues along with the name of the artist.
