Kukura's long-range shooting leads Struthers past Springfield



Matt Kukura was 4-for-8 from 3-point range with 20 points in a 55-47 win.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Matt Kukura hit 4-for-8 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points, to lead the Struthers High boys basketball team to a 55-47 victory over host Springfield on Friday.
Josh Vlosich added 12 points for Struthers, which took a 14-6 first quarter lead.
Nate Schuler scored 17 points for Springfield, which was 0-for-11 from 3-point range. Dane Dobson added 12 points and Bobby Rogers had 11.
Niles 54, Girard 25
NILES -- Sean Cleary scored 14 points to lead a balanced offensive attack for Niles, which took control with a 25-11 halftime lead.
Justin Allen had 13 points and Larry Sussman added 11 for the Red Dragons.
Brett Cubellis and Doug Starr each had eight points for Girard.
Howland 51, Salem 38
HOWLAND -- Nathan Cope scored 15 points, including three 3-point goals, to key Howland in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Jared Kirin added nine points while Tyler Scott had seven with as many rebounds to aid the Tigers (2-5, 1-0 MAC).
Austin Hutton had 15 points and Zack O'Brien 13, including three 3-point goals, to pace Salem while Phil Bennett had four points and four rebounds.
Leetonia 51, East Palestine 44
EAST PALESTINE -- Jon Williams led the Bears (7-1) with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Josh Selway and Corey Rauschenbach each scored 10 points. The Bears iced the victory by making 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter.
For the Bulldogs (3-2), Dan Hanolt scored 28 points and pulled down six rebounds. Hanolt scored all 20 points the Bulldogs scored in the second half.
Western Reserve 65, Lisbon 50
LISBON -- Dave Drevna scored 12 points to lead four players in double figures for Reserve, which took a 25-17 halftime lead.
Steve Stack, Jerod Barker and Chris Truitt each added 10 points for Reserve (7-0).
Steve Tsilimos had 14 points, Arlan Bailey scored 13 and Kyle Crismon had 10 for Lisbon (0-7).
Lowellville 64, Crestview 38
COLUMBIANA -- Jeremy Gruber had 18 points, Jim Sudon had 17 points and Mario Nero scored 14 to lead Lowellville (2-4), which outscored Crestview 23-12 in the third quarter ot pull away.
Jakob Leon scored 14 points for the Rebels (2-6).
Malvern 75, United 66
HANOVERTON -- Taylor Tucci and Trevor Halter led Malvern to victory by scoring 29 and 20 points, respectively.
Zak Kapron scored 10 points for the winners.
For United (3-3), Jimmy Phillis scored 15 points while Bryan Phillips had 11 points and eight of the Eagles' 24 rebounds. Brandon Kekel scored 13.
Southern 81,East Liverpool Christian 54
SALINEVILLE -- Tyler Baker scored 16 points to lead the Indians.
Ethan Blatch hit four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points. Chris Householder scored 13 points and Nick Puckett and Cody Warnock each had 10.
Rob McCoy lead East Liverpool Christian with 19 points.
