Sabres 4, Hurricanes 1
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ryan Miller made 29 saves, and Ales Kotalik scored on a penalty shot to help Buffalo beat Carolina. Jason Pominville, Chris Drury and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres. Buffalo swept the four-game season series against the Hurricanes, the team that beat the Sabres in the Eastern Conference finals last season en route to the Stanley Cup. Craig Adams spoiled Miller's shutout bid with a short-handed goal late in the third. Carolina entered the game with a season-best, five-game winning streak. The Hurricanes' John Grahame finished with 22 saves in his second start in three games, and first against the Sabres this season. Cam Ward had started the three previous games against Buffalo, posting a 4.25 goals-against average in the three losses.
Flyers 4, Lightning 3
TAMPA, Fla. -- Simon Gagne scored two goals, Peter Forsberg had three assists and Robert Esche made 42 saves, helping Philadelphia stop a franchise record 10-game losing streak. Alexei Zhitnik and Sami Kapanen also scored for the Flyers, who won for the first time since beating the New York Islanders 3-2 on Nov. 30. Philadelphia also ended a 10-game regular-season losing streak against the Lightning. The Flyers' previous win against Tampa Bay came on April 4, 2003. Tampa Bay got goals from Martin St. Louis, Filip Kuba and Ruslan Fedotenko. The Lightning have lost 10 of 14.
