County lockup passes grand jury inspection

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County grand jury inspection of the county jail found the facility to be "in remarkably good condition and well-maintained."
The grand jury, in a report to Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge James C. Evans released Thursday, said it was concerned that the jail isn't being utilized to its fullest potential and asked that the common pleas judges stress to the county commissioners the importance of getting the jail fully operational.
The grand jury toured the jail in November to report on its operation and physical condition and said it was particularly impressed with the quality of the jail's medical section.
Kitchen and laundry areas were clean and well-maintained, and recreation areas, featuring three gymnasiums, were judged to be "more than adequate," the report said.
