Woman jailed in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The woman accused of shooting 26-year-old David Guerrero of Hubbard in the head at her New York Avenue home Saturday night was being held in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of 200,000 bond.
Dena Byrd, aka Dena Muldrow, 31, was video-arraigned Tuesday in municipal court on two counts of felonious assault. She will be back in court Jan. 2 for a preliminary hearing.
Guerrero, of East Liberty Street, was in critical condition Tuesday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Another man who was reportedly with Guerrero was fired at but not hit.
Byrd-Muldrow told police that two gunmen forced their way into her home around 6:10 p.m. Saturday looking for "a dude named Byrd" and she fired at both men. Police said discrepancies in versions of her story made them suspicious.
Shooting victims ID'd
YOUNGSTOWN -- The two victims found shot to death inside 426 Sherwood Ave. around 3:15 a.m. Sunday have been identified by police as Devonte Kelly, 14, of East Boston Avenue, and Quinton Floyd, 23, of West Warren Avenue. An anonymous caller, using the pay phone at a convenience store on Glenwood Avenue, alerted police to the crime. Officers found Kelly sitting in a chair in the living room, shot in the head. Floyd was found behind another chair, also shot in the head.
Extra patrols continue
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police will continue their holiday traffic blitz through Sunday. Since last Wednesday, officers working extra patrols, mainly on Interstate 680, have been looking for speeders, seat belt violators and those driving impaired, said Detective Sgt. Rick Alli, department spokesman.
Woman reports crimes
CAMPBELL -- Police are investigating a reported assault, kidnapping, rape and theft that occurred Friday at Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority apartments on Monroe Street. A police report states a woman was approached by a man about 2 p.m. and invited to smoke drugs with him; he then assaulted and raped her.
When freed, she fled the scene and returned to where her car was parked to find it had been stolen, police said. Youngstown police recovered the car Tuesday; no arrest has been made. The victim was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Fires at commercial sites
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters have requested demolition of a former retail store at 1231 Market St., site of a fire around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fire was showing at the rear of the vacant building when crews arrived. Damage was set at 5,000, and the cause remains under investigation.
Around 3:45 a.m. Monday, fire was intentionally set at 2308 Oak Hill Ave., a vacant commercial building, the fire department said. For safety reasons, the building was allowed to burn down. Damage was listed as 6,000, a total loss.
Arraigned in burglary
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Two men were arrested Christmas Day and accused of attempting to take copper pipes from an electric substation.
Ellwood City police said they found Dennis Mercandante, 38, of North Beaver Township, and Kevin Black, 24, of New Castle, at the Penn Power substation at 6:35 a.m. Police said the men were wearing masks and loading a trailer with copper tubing. Police estimate the tubing was valued at 10,000.
Both men were arraigned on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property, possessing instruments of crime and criminal conspiracy.
Restaurant robbed
CAMPBELL -- One shot was fired, but no one was hurt when the Main Moon Restaurant on McCartney Road was robbed, police said Tuesday. Two men robbed the business Friday.
Fire damages home
AUSTINTOWN -- A fire did 35,000 damage to a home at 5422 North Beacon Drive. The fire department got the call at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The fire was confined to a sun room, with smoke damage through the rest of the house, the fire department said. There were no injuries reported. The fire was likely electrical, the department said.
