What Legislature passed
In addition to a law that will boost the punishment for rape or attempted rape of victims younger than 13, state legislators passed several other measures targeting sex offenders during the two-year session that ended last week. They include:
Imposing a mandatory two-year prison term for sexual battery of victims under 13.
Requiring a mandatory one-year prison term for gross sexual imposition involving a child under 13 if the offender has a past offense or if corroborating evidence proves the case.
Requiring judges to give the maximum sentence for defendants convicted of three first- or second-degree violent crimes, including sex crimes.
Increasing penalties for public indecency if the victim is under 13 and the defendant has a past conviction.
Requiring community notification for registered offenders to include a photograph.
Requiring those classified as sexually violent predators to wear a tracking device upon release unless the court removes the classification.
