'Bash' is Wednesday at Camelot
BOARDMAN -- Pete Nittoli decided it was time for the area high school bowling teams to hold a holiday tournament.
Thus, his "Winter Recess Bash" was organized and is set for Wednesday morning at Camelot Lanes.
"People asked me to organize something since I've been around bowling and have enough contacts, so that's how the Bash came to be," said Nittoli, the Canfield High School varsity boys coach.
Nineteen teams from 11 schools are entered.
The schools are Canfield, Campbell, Champion, McDonald, Struthers, Ursuline, Warren Harding, Youngstown Christian, Newark, Columbus Whitehall and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin.
Of those, 12 will be boys teams and seven girls.
One of the area's top bowlers from the participating schools is Campbell's Robert Harvischak.
Nittoli's top varsity bowlers taking part in the first "Winter Recess Bash" are sophomore Steve Carey (210 avg.) and junior Jason Telford (205).
Prior to the high school season, Nittoli's boys team placed seventh out of 64 boys teams in the "Best of the Best Tournament" in Columbus.
Nittoli also had his squad bowl against the Youngstown State men's team.
The "Bash" starts at 9:30. Trophies for first- and second-place teams will be awarded, along with medals for top individual scores.
