HOW THEY DID
Ohio and Pennsylvania
The majority of schoolchildren tested in Ohio and Pennsylvania failed to reach the proficient level in 2005 math and reading achievement tests. Still, the results from both states were higher than the national average. The percentage of pupils above the proficient level, as compared to the national average, were:
Grade eight math: Ohio -- 34, Pennsylvania -- 31, national -- 29.
Grade eight reading: Ohio -- 36, Pennsylvania -- 36, national -- 29.
Grade four math: Ohio -- 43, Pennsylvania -- 41, national -- 35.
Grade four reading: Ohio -- 35, Pennsylvania -- 36, national -- 30.
