AUSTINTOWN -- Township police will soon have three new cruisers, police Chief Bob Gavalier told township trustees at a meeting Thursday.
The three Ford Crown Victorias will each cost 20,607, he said. They should be delivered in three to five months, he said.
Gavalier said the department received a 17,000 state grant for its anti-drug Drug Abuse Resistance Education school program. It also received 1,400 from the Fraternal Order of Eagles for D.A.R.E., and 5,000 toward a new police dog, he said. The department is retiring its dog Hurie, who will soon be 10 years old. A new dog will cost 10,000, Gavalier has said.
Parks department head Joyce Gottron said the department received a 1,000 grant from Wal-Mart, which it will use for landscaping around Stacey Pavilion in Township Park.
Unauthorized removal
YOUNGSTOWN -- The sounds of crashing glass were heard when police arrived at 1102 Parkview Ave. on Wednesday to check out reports of the vacant house being stripped. Police said they found William L. Clemons, 38, of Gray Street, on the second floor of the house separating a window from its frame. Clemons was charged with possession of criminal tools and unauthorized removal. He was arraigned Thursday in municipal court and released on his own recognizance. He will be back in court Jan. 10 for a pretrial hearing.
New recycling site
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mayor Jay Williams, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and the Mahoning County commissioners will attend the dedication of a recycling drop-off center at the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown, 2105 Oak Hill Ave., at 1 p.m. today. The center will accept newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office paper, plastic containers with the 1-5 recycling label, glass bottles, metal cans and corrugated cardboard.
Arrested at Value City
BOARDMAN -- A 17-year-old Youngstown boy is charged with robbery and accused of fighting with a store security guard who police say was trying to stop the boy from shoplifting.
The Wilkinson Drive boy was lodged in the Mahoning County Jail.
Police were called Wednesday afternoon to Value City Department Store, Boardman-Poland Road, where store security officers had detained the boy. The security officers told police that when they confronted the boy, who they said was trying to leave the store without paying for merchandise, he fought with them.
Woman fires at intruder
WARREN -- A homeowner opened fire on a would-be thief. A Bonnie Brae Avenue Southeast woman told police she heard noises in her unattached garage about 10 p.m. Tuesday. Because of previous break-ins, she got her gun. She went to the garage to investigate and was confronted by a man who charged at her. The homeowner told police she fired several rounds as he fled but didn't know if she'd hit him.
Volunteers sought
YOUNGSTOWN -- First Night Youngstown is seeking volunteers for its upcoming New Year's Eve celebration. Volunteers working a three-hour shift will receive a free admission button to attend the evening's events. EMS donation
SALEM -- Wal-Mart Super Center in Salem has donated 2,250 to Columbiana Emergency Medical Services for the purchase of three EZ-IO Intraosseous drills. These devices allow paramedics to rapidly insert a needle into a patient who would need either medications or fluid to help resolve an emergency medical condition. These devices will increase ability to care for patients who suffer from medical or traumatic conditions where intravenous access is difficult if not impossible to obtain.
