Groups look to offer support for sales tax

LISBON -- Columbiana County Commissioner Sean Logan said Wednesday there are two new groups that may work to pass the sales tax on the November ballot.
The commissioners are hoping voters will approve a 0.5-percent county sales tax that would bring in about $4 million a year.
Logan said one group is made up of about seven people who expressed interest in promoting the tax. A second group is made up of people who are considering what message is needed to explain the tax to voters.
Both groups are just getting started. They would have to file as political action groups if they plan to spend money to promote the issue, according to the county board of elections.
County officials and citizens have worked as the Cents Make Sense committee to promote the tax. The tax was defeated in 2005 and the May primary. That committee is still in existence, Logan said.
