Salem panel votes to approve sale of last lot in industrial park

SALEM -- City council's economic development committee voted Tuesday to approve the sale of its last lot in its industrial park.
The committee voted to have legislation prepared for next week's council meeting to approve the sale as an emergency measure.
City Service Director Joseph Julian said that Cardinal Pumps and Exchangers Inc. wanted to buy lot 38.
The cost of the 3.3 acres would be $25,380.
Scott Mingus, a vice president with J Herbert Construction of Salem, said the building would have 20,000 square feet. The cost of the building wasn't known.
The company would continue to have nine workers.
Cardinal Pumps has been leasing space in another building in the industrial park since 1987. The building's owner wants to use the space Cardinal occupies.
J Herbert Construction plans to build up to a 100,000 square-foot building on lot 39. That space would be rented to other companies.
Mingus said that he knew of companies trying to find land for companies in Salem.
Julian said he had $150,000 in his appropriation this year to obtain land to expand the park. Property owners near the industrial park were not interested in selling, he said.
