MLB ROUNDUP Tuesday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Royals 2, Twins 0
MINNEAPOLIS -- Mark Redman threw a five-hitter to win for the first time in seven starts and John Buck hit an RBI double to lead Kansas City past Minnesota. Redman (8-8) allowed five hits, struck out three and walked none, keeping the Twins off-balance with pitches as fast as 84 mph and as slow as 64. Redman won for the first time since July 25. It was his second career complete game shutout. Minnesota's Matt Garza (1-3) allowed five hits and two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. The Twins were shut out for the 12th time.
Rangers 9, Orioles 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kevin Millwood allowed eight hits in his second complete game of the season and Mark Teixeira hit a tie-breaking homer for Texas. Millwood (13-9) struck out a season-high eight and did not issue a walk in his 14th career complete game, tying Vicente Padilla for the team lead in victories. Millwood has won all three starts against Baltimore this season, including two complete games. Teixeira's 22nd homer, a solo shot off Rodrigo Lopez (9-14) in the fifth, put Texas in front to stay, 4-3. The Rangers put the game away with a five-run seventh. Lopez, the AL leader in losses and runs allowed (119), gave up seven runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
White Sox 12, Devil Rays 9
CHICAGO -- Jermaine Dye homered and drove in four runs, and Joe Crede tied a career-high with four hits and also drove in two runs to lead Chicago. Delmon Young went 2-for-3 in his major league debut for Tampa Bay, two months after serving a 50-game suspension in the minors for throwing his bat at an umpire. He got hit on his right shoulder during his first at-bat and hit a two-run homer during his third plate appearance. Jorge Cantu hit a two-run homer off White Sox reliever Neal Cotts in the eighth for the Devil Rays, who have lost five straight games. Freddy Garcia (13-8) allowed five runs and seven hits in seven innings, winning back-to-back starts for the first time since June. Bobby Jenks pitched a perfect ninth for his 37th save.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Phillies 10, Nationals 6
WASHINGTON -- Ryan Howard tied Philadelphia's single-season record with his major league-leading 48th home run. Howard hit a three-run shot in the sixth inning off reliever Kevin Gryboski, equaling the franchise mark set by Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt in 1980. Brett Myers (10-6) allowed three runs in six innings for the Phillies. Mike Lieberthal hit a two-run homer off Nationals starter Tony Armas (8-10), and Jimmy Rollins and Abraham Nunez had three hits apiece. Howard leads the majors with 125 RBIs. Alfonso Soriano hit his 42nd home run for Washington.
Braves 13, Giants 8
ATLANTA -- Barry Bonds hit two homers in a game for the first time since 2004 but that didn't wasn't enough to keep Atlanta from its longest home winning streak in more than three months. Bonds hit a pair of drives over the center-field wall, giving him 727 homers for his career. But Andruw Jones went deep twice, Chipper Jones and Adam LaRoche also homered to beat San Francisco. The Braves have won three straight at Turner Field -- their longest home streak since a season-best four in a row from May 15-18.
Astros 10, Brewers 3
HOUSTON -- Pinch-hitter Jason Lane hit a grand slam during Houston's seven-run eighth inning, and the Astros matched a season high with their fourth straight victory. Houston's Willy Taveras went 0-for-3, ending his hitting streak at 30 games -- the second-longest in the majors this season behind Chase Utley's 35-game run for Philadelphia. Taveras' hitting streak is the longest in Astros history, surpassing Jeff Kent's 25-game streak in 2004. Craig Biggio hit an early two-run homer for the Astros, but the game was tied at 3 before Houston's wild eighth inning against Brian Shouse (1-2). Lane's grand slam to left field was the first of his career and Houston's second of the season. It was Houston's first pinch-hit slam since Gregg Zaun connected in June 2002. Chad Qualls (5-3) had two strikeouts in one inning for the win that broke a five-game home losing streak.
Marlins 9, Cardinals 1
ST. LOUIS -- Dan Uggla homered and drove in four runs, and Hanley Ramirez was a home run shy of the cycle for Florida, which won its ninth straight by beating up Mark Mulder and St. Louis. Mulder (6-7) lasted only 1 2/3 innings, matching the shortest outing of his career. He gave up five runs on six hits in his second start since returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for more than two months. Scott Olsen allowed three hits in eight innings for Florida, which matched its longest winning streak of the year. The Marlins began a 12-game trip without manager Joe Girardi, who stayed at home with his pregnant wife while bracing for a possible hurricane. Preston Wilson hit the first leadoff home run of his career in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1. Olsen (11-7) didn't allow another hit until Gary Bennett singled to start the sixth. The Cardinals left no runners on base.
