Browns to consider adding a veteran QB

Coach Romeo Crennel is looking to add more experience behind Charlie Frye.
BEREA (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders dusted off 38-year-old Jeff George, and the Tennessee Titans signed the well-traveled Kerry Collins as a backup. Will the Cleveland Browns be the next team to sign a veteran NFL quarterback?
Coach Romeo Crennel hasn't ruled out that possibility.
"The door is not closed on that," he said Tuesday.
For months, the Browns have been exploring the potential of bringing in a seasoned quarterback as a No. 2 behind Charlie Frye, their second-year QB who was handed the starting job when Trent Dilfer was traded this spring.
Crennel has been pleased with Frye's progress during training camp and the preseason. However, backups Ken Dorsey has just 10 starts, and Derek Anderson has none.
Crennel is still toying with the idea of adding another experienced quarterback.
"Just because it's the last preseason game, it doesn't mean you are going to close the door," Crennel said as the Browns prepared for their final exhibition game against Chicago on Thursday.
Whether that door is open just a crack, halfway or flung wide at the hinges is anybody's guess.
Importance of backup
But Crennel has been around the league long enough to understand the importance of having a quarterback ready and waiting in case of an injury or if Frye doesn't perform up to expectations.
The Browns have continually scanned the waiver wire to see what might be available, and the latest name to appear is A.J. Feeley, a one-time starter for Philadelphia and Miami, who was cut by the San Diego Chargers Monday.
Crennel said the Browns will examine Feeley's case to see if he could help them.
"I think we will take a look at him to see how much interest we have," he said. "I'm not going to say if we have interest or not. I think we have to do due diligence with the front office, the personnel department, our coaches, and then take a look from there."
With Collins going to the Titans, another name that could be kicked around at Browns headquarters is Billy Volek, Tennessee's current starter who is holding things down until Vince Young is ready to take over.
In the meantime, Crennel said he might alternate Dorsey and Anderson as his second stringer on a weekly basis.
