YSU opens, enrollment up 3 percent

Monday, August 28, 2006 YOUNGSTOWN — Opening day enrollment at Youngstown State University ran nearly 3 percent higher than last fall. The university reported 13,009 students enrolled as of today, up 357 from a year ago. YSU had been experiencing annual growth in enrollment numbers for four straight years, reaching 13,101 in fall 2004 before falling back last year to 12,812. Opening day numbers traditionally increase slightly by the 14th day of the fall semester, the official count date. This year's number include 2,343 new students on campus. The university had projected a 12,913 enrollment this fall and it appears that goal will be met. YSU launched a concerted effort last spring to boost enrollment numbers this year, focusing both on continuing students and incoming freshmen.
