Volunteers to learndetails about petitions
HUBBARD -- Township trustees are having a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the township administration building for residents interested in circulating petitions for sanitary sewers in three areas of the township.
Trustees will explain the process to residents volunteering to circulate petitions.
Three areas -- Kermont Heights, West Hubbard No. 1 and West Hubbard No. 2 -- have engineering started for sewers and would be included in a sewer project if the 80 percent area participation requirement is met, according to Trustee Chairman Frederick Hanley.
Once enough signatures from property owners are obtained to meet the requirement, public hearings would be held, Hanley said.
Registrations setfor city kindergarten
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown city schools will host centralized kindergarten registrations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday in the second-floor board room at the administration building, 20 W. Wood St.
Parents or guardians must bring a birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security card, verification of address and custody papers, if needed, for each child to be registered.
Fire destroys home
VIENNA -- A home under construction on Turkey Run Road was destroyed by fire.
Firefighters were called to the house at 1:44 a.m. Sunday, according to a Trumbull County 911 dispatcher.
The house also had apparently been set on fire late last week, the dispatcher said.
No details were available about the homeowner.
House fire in city
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters were still battling a house fire at the corner of Cleveland and Overlook avenues at 10 p.m. Sunday.
They were called to the blaze at 8:36 p.m., according to a county dispatcher.
No other details were available Sunday night.
Recognition awards
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County Sheriff William Romine announced that Pa. state Reps. Richard Stevenson of Grove City, R-8th, and Michael Gruitza of Hermitage, D-7th, have received Legislative Recognition Awards from the Pennsylvania Sheriff's Association.
The two were instrumental in obtaining $37,500 in state grants to buy a new four-wheel drive Ford Expedition and equipment to transport the sheriff department's drug-sniffing dog.
Heating costs seminar
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A free seminar for senior citizens on home heating costs will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Active Aging Inc., at the Lew Davies Community Center, 1034 Park Ave.
Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., and light refreshments will be provided.
State Sen. Bob Robbins of Salem Township, R-50th, will host the event, which will include representatives of the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission, First Energy Corp., National Fuel Gas Distribution Corp. and Crawford County Weatherization Program.
There will be tips on saving energy, programs available to help with energy bills and changes to the utility shut-off law.
