AMERICAN LEAGUE
Mariners 6, Red Sox 3
SEATTLE -- Rookie Cha Seung Baek took a shaky no-hit bid into the sixth inning, Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam and the Seattle Mariners swept Boston in a three-game series for the first time since 1989. David Ortiz hit his major league-leading 47th homer with one out in the Boston sixth. All-Star outfielder Manny Ramirez again sat out with a sore right knee and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 14 games.
Yankees 11, Angels 8
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Bernie Williams homered twice and drove in six runs, and Derek Jeter also hit two home runs as the New York Yankees ended their longest road trip of the season by beating the Los Angeles Angels. Jeff Karstens (1-0) earned his first major league win, helping the AL East leaders salvage the series finale. The Yankees went 7-4 on their three-city swing, which started with a five-game sweep at Boston.
White Sox 6, Twins 1
CHICAGO -- Mark Buehrle won for the second time in two months, A.J. Pierzynski and Joe Crede hit consecutive home runs and the Chicago White Sox beat Minnesota to cut the Twins' lead in the AL wild-card race to a half-game. Pierzynski and Crede connected in the fifth as Chicago turned a one-run edge into a 5-1 lead, and the White Sox went on to avoid a three-game sweep. Buehrle (11-11) left to a standing ovation in the eighth. Carlos Silva (8-12) took the loss.
Blue Jays 10, Royals 6
TORONTO -- Ted Lilly won in his first start since tussling with manager John Gibbons, and Bengie Molina hit a grand slam that led Toronto.
Orioles 5, Devil Rays 4
BALTIMORE -- Miguel Tejada singled in the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles extended the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' road losing streak to 10 games.
Rangers 3, Athletics 0
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Vicente Padilla allowed four hits over eight innings and Matt Stairs homered as the Texas Rangers stopped Oakland's three-game winning streak. Dan Haren had won six straight decisions for the AL West-leading Athletics, but Padilla outpitched him. Padilla (13-8) improved to 3-1 in his six starts against Oakland this season, striking out eight to match his season high and walking four. Akinori Otsuka pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 31 chances. Gary Matthews Jr. went 3-for-4 for the Rangers, who had lost five of their previous six. Haren (12-10), who had not lost since July 21, struck out a career-high 12 in seven innings. He allowed three runs and seven hits, walking two.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cardinals 10, Cubs 6
ST. LOUIS -- Gary Bennett won a game for St. Louis with two outs in the ninth for the second straight day, hitting a grand slam to give the Cardinals a victory.
Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX -- Wilson Betemit hit a two-run homer and Rafael Furcal tripled in two more to help the Los Angeles Dodgers take two out of three from Arizona. The win, coupled with San Diego's 6-3 loss at Colorado, moved the Dodgers two games ahead of the Padres in the NL West. The Diamondbacks, losers of six of seven, fell five games back and stayed 31/2 behind Cincinnati in the wild-card race. Rookie Chad Billingsley (5-3) beat Arizona for the second time in as many tries. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings to improve to 4-0 in his last six starts.
Marlins 4, Brewers 3
MIAMI -- Pinch-hitter Mike Jacobs doubled home Jeremy Hermida with two outs in the ninth inning and the Florida Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers for their seventh straight victory. The surprising Marlins moved within three games of Cincinnati in the NL wild-card race. After David Bell homered off Joe Borowski (2-2) to tie it in the Milwaukee ninth, the Marlins won it in the bottom half.
Giants 8, Reds 0
SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie Matt Cain pitched seven sharp innings and the resurgent San Francisco Giants won again, beating the slumping Cincinnati Reds. Omar Vizquel, Ray Durham and Shea Hillenbrand each drove in two runs as the Giants won for the 11th time in 14 games. Barry Bonds added three hits for San Francisco, which pulled within two games of Cincinnati in the wild-card race. The Reds have lost four of five since climbing within percentage points of NL Central-leading St. Louis.
Rockies 6, Padres 3
DENVER -- Cory Sullivan drove in a career-high three runs with three hits and Aaron Cook kept up his winning ways against San Diego as the Colorado Rockies beat the Padres. Matt Holliday hit his 24th homer and drove in two runs for the Rockies.
Braves 13, Nationals 6
ATLANTA -- Jeff Francoeur, Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones hit home runs and Adam LaRoche capped a six-run third inning with a three-run double, lifting the Atlanta Braves over the Washington Nationals.
