Sunday, August 27, 2006 YSU Volleyball DAYTON — Youngstown State defeated Southern Illinois, 31-29, 30-26, 30-22, at the University of Dayton Tournament Saturday. Cari Leslie had 11 kills, 13 points and 15 digs for the Penguins (1-2), while Allison Heinz and Ruth Boscaljon added 10 points each. Karla Everhart had 26 sets and Janelle McDonald had 11 digs. LOCAL Springfield HOF NEW MIDDLETOWN — The first class of inductees to the Springfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted Oct. 20 prior to the school's football game against South Range. There is also a banquet scheduled for the following night. Basketball officials The Mahoning Valley Basketball Officials Association will hold an informal get-together at 3 p.m. Sept. 2 at Davidson's Restaurant, 3636 Canfield Rd. in Cornersburg. All members of the association are encouraged to attend for an afternoon of fellowship and to watch the Ohio State-Northern Illinois football game. Bowling BOARDMAN — The father-son team of Don Smith Sr. and Don Smith Jr. recently captured the 2006 Boardman Summer Doubles title at Boardman Lanes. The 48-member league, including four women, bowled a 13-week season. To win the final third, the Smiths defeated the wild-card pair of Nick Gabrick and Russ Turner. Frank Palocyi and Rob Rosenberg won the first third, while Tim DeMain and John Luc Jr. won the second third. Turner's 298 was tops in the rolloffs. Gabrick, Rosenberg, Sam Carissimi, Bill DeCicco and Dr. Dave Wyatt all had 300s during the summer season. Other high games were by Bob Smolko (299) and Rea Buttermore and Jason Carnahan (297s). Rita Evans' 279 was highest among the women. Smolko's 235.0 topped Dr. Wyatt's 228.3 for the high-average award, while Evans won high average for women with a 193.5. Smolko rolled the league's high scratch set of 838, followed by Dave Wilkos (822) and Don Bagdassarian Jr. (800). The Boardman Summer Doubles League attracts several of the Youngstown Bowling Association's best players. Boardman Lanes co-proprietor Rich Wilson served as the league president and secretary. Correction Girard quarterback Scooter Hargate did not back up Brett Dutton last season. Hargate started the first four games before disclocating his shoulder, which required season-ending surgery. REGION College football *CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Findlay blocked an extra point attempt by the University of Charleston with 26 seconds to play and held on for a 25-24 victory. Findlay running back Michael Simpson rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard run late in the third quarter to lead the Oilers. Quarterback Mike Leach completed 9 of 11 passes for 126 yards. Simpson also gave Charleston a chance for a tie in the game's waning seconds. With 1:29 to play, Charleston recovered Simpson's fumble inside the Oilers' 10-yard line. Charleston's Scott Ransom scored on a fourth-down pass from quarterback Scott Ransom. But Findlay defensive lineman Brian Farmer blocked the extra point attempt. Findlay then recovered Charleston's attempted onside kick to seal the win. *GREENSBURG, Pa. — Eddie Hills ran for 88 yards and three touchdowns as West Liberty beat Seton Hill 31-14. Seton Hill scored less than four minutes into the game before Hills responded with an 84-yard touchdown run followed by a 21-yard reception by Renard Stevens that put West Liberty ahead 13-7 by the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Hills extended West Liberty's lead by adding his second touchdown from three yards out, bringing the score to 19-7 at the half. Jay Gullion fired his second touchdown pass of the game to Johnny Bonar at just under three minutes into the third quarter. Then Hills clinched his third touchdown from one yard out, handing West Liberty a 31-7 lead. With the clock ticking down in the fourth quarter, Antwarn Jones — who rushed for 113 yards in the game — set a Seton Hill record by running for 98 yards to finish the scoring. NATION Golf roundup *DUBLIN, Ohio — Lorena Ochoa shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-shot lead heading into the final round. Jee Young Lee shot a 68 and was at 201, with Stacy Prammanasudh (67) and Ai Miyazato (67) another two shots back. *CHASKA, Minn. — Richie Ramsay withstood his second penalty in two days to hold off Webb Simpson in the semifinals at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Ramsay will play University of Missouri senior John Kelly today with the chance to become the first player from Scotland to win the U.S. Amateur since Findlay Douglas in 1898. By advancing to today's final, Kelly and Ramsay earned an invitation to the U.S. Open and the Masters. *OSLO, Norway — Laura Davies shot a 4-under 68 to take the lead after the second round. The four-time major winner was at 7-under 137 after 36 holes. Sarah Kemp (67) was two strokes behind in second place, followed by Sherry Byrnes (72) and overnight leader Virginie Lagoutte (74) at 3 under. Pilot Pen tennis NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Lindsay Davenport began Saturday seeking to defend her Pilot Pen title. She ended it hoping she'll be able to play in the U.S. Open. Davenport retired from the Pilot Pen championship with an injured right shoulder, allowing Justine Henin-Hardenne to take the title in the final hard-court tuneup before the year's last Grand Slam tournament. In the men's final, second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko defeated Agustin Calleri, 6-4, 6-3, for his third title this season.
