YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said a suspect in the Friday afternoon slaying of a Lora Avenue man was involved in a gunfight 15 minutes later in the 400 block of Crandall Avenue.
Gregory McGee, 22, of Selma Avenue, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Saturday in a home in the 1300 block of Grandview Avenue on a charge of aggravated murder in the death of Charles Bush, 21, of Lora Avenue.
Police said that shooting occurred in a house on Saranac Avenue on the city's North Side around 4:45 p.m. Friday.
Witness account
A neighbor told police that he heard gunshots and saw a man carrying a handgun running from the house.
The man got into a red- or rust-colored car and drove east on Saranac, the witness said.
Police arriving at the scene found Bush, lying on the floor of a second-floor living room, shot in the left side.
He was alert and conscious, and knew his wound was serious, police said, adding that, when asked, he twice identified McGee as the man who shot him.
Bush was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he died about 9:30 p.m. Friday. This is the 19th homicide in Youngstown this year.
Gunfight
At 5 p.m. Friday, police were called to the 400 block of Crandall to investigate reports of a gunfight.
A witness told police that she saw McGee, whom she knew, sitting in a white car parked on the street and that a small gray car drove up with the windows rolled down and two men hanging out the windows.
The men began firing at McGee who returned fire before both vehicles sped away heading east on Crandall, the witness said.
Apparently no one was injured, but police said they believe that between 10 and 15 shots were fired.
Police offered no motive for the Bush slaying, nor an explanation for why he was at the Saranac Drive residence.
Police said the house on Saranac was the scene of a couple of drug raids and some arrests over the past 10 days.
McGee is charged with aggravated murder and is in the Mahoning County Justice Center to await arraignment.
