Spirituality Day
HOWLAND -- The Benedictine Sisters of the Byzantine Church at Queen of Heaven Monastery, 8640 Squires Lane N.E., will hold a Spirituality Day from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 16. The presenter will be Sister Susan Sisko of Mount St. Macrina Retreat Center in Uniontown, Pa. Her topic will be "The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom." The event will conclude with a celebration of vespers after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at 4:10 p.m. Suggested donation is $10. Contemplation series
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- Coffee and Contemplation, a monthly program running from September through May, is planned at the conference center at Villa Maria Community Center. The series, offered by Villa Maria Retreat Center, will focus on a variety of spiritual and holistic topics and includes time for reflection and discussion.

St. Therese novena
YOUNGSTOWN -- A novena to St. Therese of the Child Jesus is planned at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 7, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church, 252 E. Wood St. The novena will continue until St. Therese's feast day, Oct. 1, when an observance will be held after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Throughout the novena, the rosary will start at 5.
Monthly mass for guild
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will hold its monthly Mass at 10 a.m. Sept. 6 at St. Stanislaus Church. The rosary will be at 9:30.
Back-to-school event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christian Revival and Discipleship Center, 3300 Hudson Ave., will hold a back-to-school march and gospel music explosion Sept. 2. The march will start at 2 p.m. at Hayes Middle School, Crandall Avenue, and conclude at Evans Field, Wirt and Lexington streets. The gospel music program, three-on-three basketball tournament and bike giveaway will be at 3 at Evans Field. The event is part of the "Taking the Street Back ... Increase the Peace" effort.
Men of Valor weekend
YOUNGSTOWN -- Men of Valor weekend is planned today and Sunday at Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave. Men's fellowship will take place from 9 to 10 today with a workshop following. At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Bishop Jessie Gavin of Erie, Pa., will speak.
Day of Recollection
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- The Diocesan Legion of Mary Curia will hold its annual Day of Recollection on Sept. 17 at Villa Maria Community Center with the Rev. Richard Jastrebski as retreat master. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with benediction at 4 p.m. Active and auxiliary members are encouraged to attend though you need not be a member to participate. CANFIELD -- Lifecare Ministry Center, Lucille Orr Ministries Inc., 5357 Raccoon Road, will present a program at 7 p.m. Monday with the theme, "A Journey of Learning to Apply God's Words to Life's Situations."
Musician appreciation
WARREN -- Community Church of God in Christ, 310 Austin Ave., will hold a musician appreciation event at 6 p.m. Sept. 2 in honor Kwane L. Austin, minister of music, and Minister Lamar D. Austin. CANFIELD -- The Youngstown Spiritual Society will hold a message and meditation service from 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the Ursuline Center, 4300 Shields Road. Vince Lisi will present "Uncorking the Bottle!" followed by meditation and shared prayer.
Old-fashioned Sunday
POLAND -- Evangelist Monte Watts of Crown Point, Ind., will be the guest speaker for an old-fashioned Sunday program Sept. 3 at Gospel Baptist Church, 6235 Clingan Road. Services will be held at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Activities, which are open to all, will include a dinner, an afternoon tent meeting and activities for children and adults.
Parish picnic
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., will hold its parish picnic Sunday at the Maronite pavilion, Meridian Road, where a Mass will be at 11 a.m. before the picnic. There will be no 10 a.m. Mass at the church.
Speaker at museum
BEACHWOOD -- Bruce Feiler, best-selling author and award-winning journalist and speaker, will present a program Sept. 10 at the Maltz Museum, 2929 Richmond Road, in conjunction with its "Cradle of Christianity: Treasures from the Holy Land."
