CHESTER, W.Va. -- John Alford of East Liverpool was the winner of the Chester-Newell Catfish Tournament July 17.
His fish measured 38.25 inches, and he received $250.
Ducks Unlimited eventscheduled for October
NILES -- Trumbull County Ducks Unlimited's 15th annual banquet will be held Oct. 20 at Ciminero's Banquet Centre, 123 Main St.

Hunter education
Several area associations are holding hunter education classes in September.
A hunter education course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9-10 at the Eastern Ohio Conservation Club on West Calla Road between state Routes 45 and 62 in Green Township. A 10-week class for instruction in Olympic rifle shooting will begin Sept. 11. Boys and girls ages 12-17 are invited to the sessions on safe gun handling and position shooting. Brookfield Tri-District Conservation Club on Sharon-Hogue Road in Masury will conduct a Concealed Carry Firearms and Self Defense Shooting class Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 1. The class will be taught by retired deputy sheriff and police Sgt. Bruce Knodel. It will consist of four hours Friday evening from 6 to 10 and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The class will include the NRA Basic Pistol Course and additional training on self-defense shooting skills. The class will be limited to 10 students. Enrollment fee is $100, and all students must be pre-registered. Fishing derby Sept. 9
EAST PALESTINE -- The East Palestine Sportsman's Club will sponsor its 15th annual handicap fishing derby at 9 a.m. Sept. 9 at the club grounds. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and poles and bait will be provided.
Club members and other volunteers will be on hand to assist the participants. Lunch will be served, followed by an awards ceremony. The event is open to all Columbiana County residents with disabilities.

Waterfowl expo setfor mid-September
LINESVILLE -- The 25th annual Pymatuning Waterfowl Expo, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited, will be held Sept. 16-17.
The 2006 event has been revamped to include more hunting equipment, wildlife artwork, outdoor equipment, etc. Also in the works are new displays and festival activities in downtown Linesville.
This two-day event will feature numerous hunting-related vendors, including artwork by local and nationally renowned artists, Gander Mountain, the Pennsylvania State Duck Stamp competition, and decoy carvings and competition.
Visitors are invited to compete in the annual Expo Trap Shoot and enjoy presentations by regional wildlife biologists, outdoor enthusiasts and many others. On Sunday, some of the state's best waterfowl callers will compete.
This year's events will be at Linesville High School, the Linesville State Fish Hatchery, throughout downtown Linesville, and the Pymatuning Sportsman's Club.
