Friday, August 25, 2006 LOCAL Scrappers NILES — Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are teaming up for a ticket voucher program and benefit. Fans who make a donation at any one of Goodwill's nine attended collection centers will receive a ticket voucher for two free reserved seats to the Scrappers game Sept. 3. Goodwill accepts donations of clothing, household items, toys, furniture, cars and other vehicles. Goodwill donation centers are the following locations: 2747 Belmont Ave. in Liberty; Giannos Candy Plaza, 460 Youngstown-Poland Rd. in Struthers; Warren Plaza, 2077 Elm Rd.; 187 South Broadway in Salem; 2986 East State St. in Hermitage; 2611 Ellwood Rd. (Rt. 65) in New Castle; 15765 State Route 170 in Calcutta; 97 Karago Blvd. in Boardman, and 4950 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown. Sharon Speedway HARTFORD — The Fantastic Five will return to Sharon Speedway Saturday. Admission prices will be discounted to $6 for adults and $3 for teens (12-15). Kids (11 and under) will be admitted free. Fans are also encouraged to "Fill your trucks and Save your Bucks" by packing all the people into the cab of a truck legally, and the entire group will be admitted into the track for $25. Trumbull HOF NILES — The Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame will meet Monday at Damon's Restaurant on U.S. route 422, across from the Eastwood Mall. WNBA playoffs AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Cheryl Ford pulled down a postseason-record 23 rebounds and scored 11 points Thursday night as the Detroit Shock beat the Connecticut Sun 70-59 in Game 1 of the WNBA Eastern Conference finals. Ford broke Lisa Leslie's postseason rebounding record of 18 late in the third quarter, then broke her own overall franchise record of 22 in the fourth. The league record for rebounds in a game is 24 by Chamique Holdsclaw. Deanna Nolan led all scorers with 21 points, while Katie Smith added 17 and Plenette Pierson had 11 off the bench. LL World Series SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Josh Lester came up with two clutch extra-base hits Thursday night to send Columbus, Ga., to the U.S. title game of the Little League World Series. Lester hit a base-loaded triple in the second inning and doubled in two more runs in the fourth in Columbus' 8-0 win over Portsmouth, N.H. Columbus will face Beaverton, Ore., Saturday, with the winner advancing to the World Series championship game Sunday. The international title game Saturday is also set, after Kawaguchi City, Japan, defeated Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 4-1. Japan will play for Mexico, with the winner playing for the tournament crown.
