Howland rallies to beat Ashtabula Lakeside by 11



ASHTABULA -- The Howland High football team fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter, but rallied to scored 21 points in the second half to win its season opener, 21-10, over Ashtabula Lakeside Thursday night.
Bobby Mangiarelli of Howland got the game turned around when he returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Mike Papas made a place kick for the extra point.
Dwaine Thomas put the Tigers ahead when he scored on a 1-yard run later in the quarter. Papas made a placement and Howland took the lead, 14-10.
Matt Preston scored on a 4-yard run for Howland in the fourth quarter and Papas again kicked the extra point.
Thomas was the leading rusher for Howland with 56 yards on 14 carries. The Tigers rushed for 127 yards on 44 attempts, but managed just 17 yards passing.
Jamarro Spikes of Lakeside caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Hanna and Jordan Newsome's place kick made it 7-0. Newsome then made a 19-yard field goal for the early 10-0 lead.
Crestview 45, LaBrae 12
NEW WATERFORD -- Keith Drewnoski rushed for 148 yards on 20 carries, which included touchdown runs of 1, 16 and 4 yards, to lead Crestview.
Drewnoski and Josh Orr each scored on 1-yard runs and Cameron Reynolds made two place kicks to give the Rebels a quick 14-0 lead.
LaBrae's Jeff Morgan caught a 59-yard pass from Mike Ryan to cut the deficit to 14-6.
Reynolds kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Rebels in the second quarter, but Cameron Truss caught a 85-yard pass from Ryan to narrow the margin to 17-12.
It was all Crestview after that as Drewnoski scored on runs of 16 and 4 yards, Brian Peppel returned an interception pass 30 yards for a TD and Eric Whittenberger scored on a 3-yard run.
Crestview rushed for 343 yards on 51 carries and the Rebels hit on 3-of-9 passes for 72 yards.
LaBrae connected on 9-of-17 passes for 162 yards, but managed just 19 yards rushing on nine tries.
