Police probe restaurant robbery

Thursday, August 24, 2006 YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating an armed robbery of the Subway restaurant at 840 E. Midlothian Blvd. Police suspect the man who robbed the store Wednesday afternoon had knowledge of store operations because he told employees to empty not only the cash register drawer but also a cash box under the counter. The report noted the manager told police an employee was fired several weeks ago because an acquaintance stole cash during the fired employee's shift. Two employees working around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday told police a man was pacing outside the front of the store waving a white T-shirt. Several minutes later, the man tried to open a locked door of the restaurant, and one of the employees could see he had put the T-shirt over his head, covering everything but his eyes. The employee tried to lock another door, but did not do so in time to keep the man out. He told the employee, "You know what this is," and lifted his shirt to reveal a handgun in the waistband of his pants. The man then fled on foot, jumped a fence and ran away.
