NFL ROUNDUP | News and notes

Thursday, August 24, 2006 Cowboys: Drew Henson won't be on the Dallas Cowboys roster this season, and the former third baseman once considered the team's quarterback of the future might be on the trading block. "I just didn't see enough," coach Bill Parcells said. Henson's locker had already been cleaned out when reporters were allowed into the locker room before practice. For now, rookie free agent Matt Baker is the No. 3 quarterback behind Drew Bledsoe and Tony Romo. "I'm really not at liberty to discuss the situation because I'm not privy to that information," Parcells said. "He's not going to be on our roster. That's all you need to know." Parcells also reiterated that Bledsoe is the starting quarterback and that he is just trying to get a true evaluation of Romo, who has never thrown a pass in a regular season game, with extended play during the preseason. In other news, wide receiver Terrell Owens said he reaggravated his left hamstring injury by returning to practice too soon last week. "At this point, yeah, I will be close to 100 percent before I get back on the field," Owens said. "I'm not going to jeopardize my health just because of speculation or anything like that." Owens characterized his injury as a "severe pull" and said he almost certainly will miss his third straight preseason game. The Cowboys play at home Saturday night against San Francisco, Owens' original team. Patriots: New England released veteran Martin Gramatica, giving the place-kicking job to rookie Stephen Gostkowski. The fourth-round draft choice from Memphis won the competition to replace Adam Vinatieri, who signed with Indianapolis as a free agent in the offseason. In Saturday's 30-3 exhibition win over Arizona, Gostkowski was 3-for-3 on field goals, two covering 37 yards and another 33, while Gramatica didn't play. In the Patriots exhibition opener, a 26-23 loss at Atlanta, Gramatica was 2-for-2, and Gostkowski made his only attempt. Gramatica, 30, didn't play last season after spending most of his career with Tampa Bay. Lions: Detroit receiver Charles Rogers will miss Friday's preseason game at Oakland because of a knee injury, which forced him to miss the previous game and two weeks of practice. He barely played in Detroit's preseason opener, catching one pass, and was low on the depth chart when he was healthy enough to practice. He is in danger of being released or traded — if the Lions can find a team that wants him — just three years after he was drafted with the second pick overall. Rogers has just 36 career receptions for 440 yards and four touchdowns. Two broken collarbones limited him to six games over his first two seasons and he was suspended for four games last year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Colts: Running back James Mungro will miss the entire season after tearing a knee ligament during Sunday's preseason game against Seattle. Mungro, a short-yardage specialist who has scored 13 touchdowns in four seasons with the Colts, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with what coach Tony Dungy said was a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Mungro also played on special teams. Titans: Vince Young gave the Titans — and himself — a scare when the back of his throwing hand slammed against a helmet during practice. Young was examined on the field, then walked off for X-rays and did not return to practice. Coach Jeff Fisher said he wasn't too concerned, because the preliminary examination on the field indicated only a bruise. "He's going to be all right. X-rays were negative," Fisher said. "He's going to have a sore hand, and we haven't ruled him out for the game." Associated Press Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
