MLB ROUNDUP Tuesday's other games

Wednesday, August 23, 2006 AMERICAN LEAGUE Tigers 4, White Sox 0 DETROIT — Kenny Rogers shut down Chicago, giving Detroit its biggest lead in the Central in almost two weeks and guaranteeing the Tigers their first .500 season in more than a decade. Rogers (13-6) dominated for seven innings and was backed by Marcus Thames' solo homer and RBI triple. Chicago had just five hits and Mark Buehrle (10-11) allowed four runs and nine hits over 51/3 innings. Orioles 6, Twins 3 BALTIMORE — Baltimore rookie Nick Markakis homered in his first three at-bats. Seeking to become the 16th player in major league history to hit four in a game, he hit a short fly ball to left in the sixth against Willie Eyre. Brian Roberts and Corey Patterson also connected off Carlos Silva, who allowed six runs and 10 hits in 51/3 innings. He has yielded 30 homers this season. Blue Jays 4, Athletics 3 TORONTO — A.J. Burnett won his fourth straight start and Vernon Wells homered to lead Toronto. Before the game, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said he overreacted when he tangled with Ted Lilly near the dugout during Monday's game. Burnett (6-5) allowed three runs and nine hits in 62/3 innings. B.J. Ryan pitched 12/3 innings for his 28th save in 32 chances. Wells' two-run homer off Brad Halsey (3-4) in the fifth gave Toronto a 4-1 lead. Devil Rays 5, Rangers 3 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rocco Baldelli and Ben Zobrist hit consecutive sacrifice flies in the seventh inning for Tampa Bay. Shawn Camp (5-1) struck out two in a perfect seventh and Seth McClung earned his second save despite loading the bases in the ninth. NATIONAL LEAGUE Mets 8, Cardinals 7 NEW YORK — Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, putting a rousing ending to a night of grand-slam derby. St. Louis' Albert Pujols hit a slam and a three-run homer, setting a career-high with seven RBIs. The Mets' Carlos Delgado almost matched that, crunching a solo shot and a slam to reach 400 homers. Beltran's one-out drive to right field off Jason Isringhausen (4-7) capped the Mets' comeback from a 7-1 deficit. It also gave the Mets a five-game winning streak. On a rollicking night at Shea Stadium, a Mets crowd of 49,661 that included former President Clinton had plenty to cheer about. Fans found out Tom Glavine will not need surgery on his left shoulder, and learned Shawn Green was acquired from Arizona. Beltran set off the biggest ovation, connecting after Paul Lo Duca singled. Aaron Heilman (3-4) won in relief. Marlins 7, Nationals 5 MIAMI — Miguel Cabrera reached on an eighth inning error and then scored the go-ahead run on Jeremy Hermida's ground out to help Florida beat Washington. Cabrera led off the eighth by reaching on third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's fielding error. Josh Willingham singled and Mike Jacobs walked to load the bases against reliever Ryan Wagner (0-2). After Miguel Olivo flied out to short right, Hermida chopped the ball to Nick Johnson, who stepped on first before throwing wide of home. Florida added two more unearned runs to finish the scoring. Reds 14, Astros 0 CINCINNATI — Adam Dunn's three-run homer completed an eight-run third inning as Cincinnati won its fourth straight. The Reds hit four homers — Scott Hatteberg also had a three-run shot — during its most lopsided victory of the season. Right-hander Kyle Lohse (1-0) gave up four hits in eight innings and had three of his own, getting his first victory and his biggest ovations since arriving in a July 31 trade with the Twins. Phillies 6, Cubs 3 CHICAGO — Jamie Moyer won his Philadelphia debut for his first victory in five starts. Jimmy Rollins had an RBI triple in the third and the Phillies broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth to win their fourth game in a row and keep pace in the wild card race. Moyer (1-0) had a no-hitter through 41/3 innings, with two batters reaching on errors and one on a walk. The 43-year-old gave up three runs and six hits over six innings to earn his first win since July 26 and second since June 24. Ryan Madson pitched the ninth for his first save in three chances this season. Cubs rookie Ryan O'Malley (1-1) left the game in the fifth with a strained left elbow, and will be re-evaluated today. He gave up three runs and five hits in 42/3 innings. Brewers 4, Rockies 1 MILWAUKEE — Chris Capuano won for the first time since July 6, and Milwaukee sent Colorado to its fourth straight loss. Laynce Nix, making his second start in center since being recalled Aug. 18 from Triple-A Nashville, had two hits and three RBIs for the Brewers. Capuano (11-8) gave up three hits in six scoreless innings. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fourth when Yorvit Torrealba popped out, Ryan Spilborghs lined to third baseman David Bell and Luis Gonzalez hit a roller back to mound. Jose Capellan followed with two scoreless innings, striking out his last five batters. Matt Holliday homered off of Derrick Turnbow in the ninth, and Francisco Cordero got two outs for his 10th save in 10 chances since the Brewers acquired him from Texas on July 28, completing a five-hitter. Aaron Cook (8-12) allowed three runs — two earned — and seven hits in six innings. He is 2-5 in his last 10 starts. Associated Press Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
