Police: Stadium killing was drug-related

Monday, August 21, 2006 YOUNGSTOWN — Police say the fatal shooting of a Ravenwood Avenue man at a youth football game Saturday was drug-related. Authorities are still looking for the killer in the death of Larry D. Jones, 31, who was shot multiple times with a handgun in the former South High School football stadium in front of at least 600 people. From all indications, it was drug-related and stemmed from a dispute over a prior drug deal, Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said today. It had no direct relation to the football game except that both men were there, Hughes said. Police identified Anthony M. Caulton, 25, of Youngstown, on Sunday as the prime suspect in the shooting but today were calling him only "a person of interest," one of a number of "persons of interest" they want to talk to. Hughes said reports that police failed to respond to an earlier call of a fight at the stadium were untrue. Police were called to a report of a fight involving juveniles that started in the stands but moved into the parking lot. That was about an hour before the 4 p.m. shooting and not related to the homicide, Hughes said. An officer responded to the fight call within one minute, but the combatants had moved on, the chief said. The officer checked the area and found no disturbance, Hughes said.
