Sunday, August 20, 2006 Champion High grad begins Peace Corps stint HOWLAND — Bethany Stoian of Howland has been accepted into the Peace Corps. Stoian, 22, is the daughter of Gloria Stoian of Howland and Eddie Stoian of Lordstown. She departed today for Kazakhstan, a part of the former Soviet Union. She will be an education volunteer with duties of teaching English as a foreign language to students age 12 to 17, participating as a staff member of a host school and demonstrating new teaching techniques to colleagues. A graduate of Champion High School, Stoian attended Hiram College and earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish. While attending Hiram, Stoian studied abroad in Spain, Costa Rica, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Eastgate council transportation grant AUSTINTOWN — Eastgate Regional Council of Governments is organizing its fiscal year 2006 Federal Transit Administration, Specialized Transportation Grant Program for Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The program authorizes up to 80 percent federal funding to be used for the purchase of vans and/or computer equipment in transporting senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Eligible applicants are private nonprofit organizations and public bodies approved by the state to coordinate transportation services or that certify to the Ohio Department of Transportation that no private nonprofit corporations are readily available in their area. Military discounts AURORA — Active duty and retired military personnel can receive discounts on tickets for Geauga Lake & Wildwater Kingdom during Military Appreciation Days from Monday through next Sunday and Sept. 2-4. Military personnel can buy up to six tickets at $15 each, which is $9.95 off the general admission price of $24.95, by showing a valid military I.D. at any cashier window, said Michele Huff, Geauga Lake marketing service manager. License reinstatement YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Child Support Enforcement Agency is offering an opportunity for absent parents with a suspended driver's license to reinstate their license for a one-month payment plus $1 on arrears. Compost machine repair BOARDMAN — Township trustees have agreed to get the township's compost recycling machine repaired, but the compost site remains closed until further notice while the repair is done. The township's weekly branch pickup is also suspended until further notice.
