Sunday, August 20, 2006 MAHONING COUNTY CARDINAL MOONEY Curriculum: Adding advanced placement psychology course as well as a world government and Chemistry II courses. Renovations: Remodeled physics lab to accommodate both physics and chemistry classes; built a five-court tennis facility. CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF YOUNGSTOWN (ELEMENTARY) Administrators: Patricia Bauman, principal at St. Paul in Salem; Kathleen Sauline, principal at St. Rose in Girard. Renovations: $2 million addition of six classrooms, a gym and other space at Notre Dame School's Queen of All Saints Building, Warren. JACKSON-MILTON Curriculum: Implementing a Kids First Campaign; new tech labs in each building; new school Web site; adding a high school speech and debate team and a boys and girls soccer club. LOWELLVILLE Renovations: Team weight room and jump/stretch facility for all athletes added to the football locker room. MAHONING COUNTY CAREER & TECHNICAL CENTER Administrators: John Zehentbauer, career tech director; Jane Hogan, academic director. Curriculum: Adding advanced placement chemistry and calculus courses. Renovations: Remodeling the auto tech lab and the cafetorium. POLAND Administrators: Brian Wolf, interim high school principal; Wendy Butch, elementary guidance counselor. Curriculum: Expanding world history to three course offerings: world history as required course, college world history as an elective and honors world history as an elective. Guidance services expanded to full-time at middle-school level. Renovations: Replaced high school roof, replaced boilers at North Elementary, renovation of high school science labs, computer upgrades in all buildings, replacement of lighting fixtures in all schools with efficient fixtures, adding instructional equipment such as Smartboards, interactive whiteboards and science equipment at various buildings. SEBRING Administrators: Vito Weeda, McKinley High School principal. SPRINGFIELD Curriculum: Adding new computer technology and Smartboards to the elementary, intermediate and high schools. SOUTH RANGE Administrators: Dennis J. Dunham, principal; Dr. Phillip J. Latessa, high school principal. STAMBAUGH CHARTER ACADEMY Administrators: Charles Fazekas, principal. Curriculum: A new K-5 charter school opening at 2420 Donald Ave., Youngstown. STRUTHERS Administrators: Lori Saunders, coordinator of special services; Pete Pirone Jr., elementary principal; Vince Colaluca, middle school principal; Matt Bowen, assistant elementary/middle school principal; Tom Krestel, athletic director. URSULINE HIGH SCHOOL Administrators: Judy Shields, junior/senior guidance counselor. Curriculum: Launching a junior mentoring program with alumni mentoring junior students; adding a law course. WEST BRANCH Administrators: Brian Coffee, assistant high school principal. Curriculum: Investigations math, a pilot program for the past few years, will now be incorporated from first through the fifth grade. Renovations: New or renovated buildings in a $48 million building program — high school renovated and expanded, new middle school/elementary school, new Damascus and Knox elementary buildings. YOUNGSTOWN Administrators: Marilyn Mastronarde, Westside Upper Elementary principal; Robert Kearns, East/P. Renovations: $7 million renovated and expanded Kirkmere Elementary School to open Sept. 5; new $13 million P. Ross Berry Middle School to open Oct. 31. TRUMBULL COUNTY HOWLAND Administrators: Maria Theofilos, assistant high school principal; Gary Gawdyda, Howland Glen Elementary principal. Renovations: New roof and new wheelchair lift at Howland Middle School; new parking lots at Howland Glen and Howland Springs buildings. HUBBARD Curriculum: Adding sign language as a global world language in the high school. JFK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Administrators: Joe Krumpak, administrative assistant; Jillian Philips, director of advancement. Curriculum: Buddy Program instituted in seventh, eighth and ninth grades. LIBERTY Renovations: Resurfacing of the front parking lots at both Blott Elementary and Guy Middle schools, including the playground at Blott; relocating the entrance to Leopard Stadium to the east side of the home bleachers. MATHEWS Administrators: Michael King, Neal Middle School principal. TRUMBULL CAREER & TECHNICAL CENTER Administrators: Jason Gray, supervisor of attendance. Curriculum: Adding an introduction to engineering design program to be housed at satellite locations in Newton Falls, Girard and Hubbard. Renovations: New $6.4 million, 44,000-square-foot adult education wing opens this fall. WARREN Administrators: Kathy Shook, executive director of Department Teaching and Learning; Ruth Zitnik, Harding High School principal; James Mitolo, East Middle School principal, Edward Ashcroft, Turner Middle School principal; Christine Gibowicz, Alden Elementary principal; Corey Bubon, Emerson Elementary principal; Stephen Chiaro, Mann Elementary principal. Curriculum: new learning maps for grades K-8 in language arts, math, science and social studies; participating in America's Choice, a national effort to improve teaching and learning, focusing on rapidly improve math achievement for middle school pupils; improved data access to help make decisions about student learning. Renovations: New $20 million K-8 building at the Lincoln site is under construction on Atlantic Avenue and will open fall 2007; the new $42.7 million Harding High School on Elm Road is under construction and will open fall 2007; construction on a new $21.3 million K-8 building on Willard Avenue begins this fall. COLUMBIANA COUNTY COLUMBIANA Administrators: Dave Cappuzzello, South Side Middle School principal. Curriculum: Launching pilot programs in math and reading at the elementary level. COLUMBIANA COUNTY CAREER & TECHNICAL CENTER Administrators: Kelly Weikart, adult education director; John Garwood, maintenance supervisor; David Brookes part-time special education supervisor. Curriculum: Adding a veterinary science technology program; adding a pre-engineering materials joining component to the welding curriculum. Renovations: Converted the Equine Building into a veterinary science technology complex. CRESTVIEW Administrators: Dan Hill, special education supervisor. HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Administrators: Tammy McCoy, secondary principal. Curriculum: Adding a second kindergarten class; undergoing accreditation through the Association of Christian Schools International. UNITED Curriculum: Implementing a K-8 Bullying Prevention Program; Starting a Point of Sale system in the cafeterias; adding a girls varsity soccer team. Renovations: New lights and ceiling tile in several areas of the high school; replaced football scoreboard and added baseball and softball scoreboards. MERCER COUNTY FARRELL Administrators: Lee McFerren, assistant to the superintendent/high school principal; Carole Borkowski, elementary principal. Curriculum: Science Is Elementary program added to the elementary school; mandatory 45 hours of after-school tutoring for pupils in grades seven, eight, 10 and 11 who have been identified as basic or below basic on their Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests; creating a service-learning center in the high school to establish projects connecting the needs and assets of the community with the school curriculum and resources. Renovations: Starting a $15 million improvement project to upgrade school heating, cooling and lighting and renovate the football stadium. HERMITAGE Administrators: Paul Engleman, school psychologist; Melanie Piddington, elementary guidance counselor. Curriculum: Elementary will implement a new spelling program; institute a review of the K-6 language arts curriculum; forensics course added at Hickory High School as well as some physical education electives. MERCER Administrators: Ronald Rowe, assistant superintendent; Timothy Dadich, middle school principal: Michelle Dietrich, coordinator of special education/assistant elementary principal. SHARON CITY Administrators: Michael Calla, acting superintendent; Traci Valentino, Case Avenue Elementary principal; Laura Giannuzzi, middle/high school guidance counselor. Curriculum: Humanities reduced to zero credit; elementary school boundary adjustments will result in Musser Elementary getting 100 new pupils and West Hill Elementary getting 80 new pupils. SHARPSVILLE Administrators: Mark Ferrara, superintendent; Frank Robinson, substitute administrator; Matt Dieter, elementary principal; Melinda Isles, middle school guidance counselor; Ellen Kellar, high school guidance counselor. Curriculum: Expanding one kindergarten section to full day; revised the high school and middle school science curriculums; upgraded various computer labs. WEST MIDDLESEX Administrators: Vincent Comiskey, elementary principal; George Latkey: guidance counselor. Curriculum: Restructured class time in grades four, five and six to allow for larger blocks of instruction; added a nine-week keyboarding course for all sixth-graders; added a statistics course through the University of Pittsburgh; added a microcomputer applications course through California University of Pennsylvania; added an American government course through Butler County Community College; added personal fitness, team sports and video production elective courses. LAWRENCE COUNTY NEW CASTLE Administrators: Terence P. Meehan, assistant to superintendent, curriculum and instruction and transportation director, Croton pre-kindergarten principal. SHENANGO Curriculum: New social studies series will be used in grades K-6. Renovations: High school auditorium is being renovated and will open in late September. WILMINGTON Curriculum: Ninth-grade civics has been changed to U.S. history from the Civil War to World War II and will include a collaboration with ninth-grade English with cross-curriculum projects; a grant was received to launch "Science: It's Elementary" in the middle school; new computer lab added at New Wilmington Elementary.
