Accounting program
COLUMBUS -- Latasia Morris, a junior at Hubbard High School, and A'Licia Stewart, a senior at Campbell Memorial High School, were among 35 minority high school students from across Ohio to participate in the recent 11th annual Accounting Careers Awareness Program at Ohio State University. The program is held annually to introduce minority high school students to careers in business and accounting. The program is sponsored by The Ohio Society of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants. Participants attend leadership and career workshops, meet with minority business professionals and compete for college scholarships.
CityScenes photo contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Aug. 31 is the deadline for the third annual CityScenes photography competition sponsored by Youngstown State University and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber. The event is open to students, professional and nonprofessional photographers and offers prizes ranging from $25 to $500. This year's theme is "Faces of the Community" and will feature informal photos of family, friends and neighbors in the Mahoning Valley going about their everyday lives. Winning entries will be displayed in the Rose Marie Smith Gallery on the second floor Tod Hall at YSU. For information on contest rules, contact Jean Engle at (330) 941-3291.
Substitute teachers
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, the educational service agency serving Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties, is looking for emergency, day-to-day substitute teachers, seeking to increase the number of available substitutes in the public schools. A two-day training program will be offered Sept. 14 and 15, focusing on classroom management, instructional strategies, school procedures and routines, team building and positive behavior in the classroom. Buckeye Girls State
AUSTINTOWN -- Julia Barham, a junior at Austintown Fitch High School, was selected by the Youngstown Business and Professional Women and East Liverpool Business & amp; Professional Women to attend Buckeye Girls State held this summer at Ashland University. The program trains young women in the duties, rights and privileges of citizenship. Barham was selected from the 900 participants to serve as the "prosecuting attorney."
New-pupil registration
MINERAL RIDGE -- Registration for new pupils in the Weathersfield schools will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Parents must bring each child's birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security number, proof of residency and legal proof of custody, if applicable. Middle school class lists will be posted on the building windows as of 3 p.m. Aug. 25. High school homeroom lists will be posted in the cafeteria on opening day, Aug. 28. Schedules for seventh through 12th grades will be passed out in their homerooms opening day.
Middle school orientation
POLAND -- Poland Middle School will hold an orientation for new seventh- and eighth-grade pupils from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29. Seventh-graders may pick up their schedules at the school office from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 24. Eighth-grade schedules will be available from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 23.
Lakeview orientation
CORTLAND -- Lakeview schools will hold orientations for new pupils starting Thursday and Friday at Cortland Elementary. Third-graders whose last names begin with A through H should report at 1 p.m. Thursday. Third-graders whose last names begin with I through P should report at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Third-graders whose last names begin with Q through Z should report at 12:30 p.m. Friday. All fourth- and fifth-graders should report at 10 a.m. Friday. All Bazetta Elementary pupils should report at 10 a.m. Aug. 23, and all middle school pupils should report at 1 p.m. Aug. 23. High school students are to report at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 22.
St. Joseph registration
CAMPBELL -- St. Joseph The Provider School, 633 Porter Ave., will hold registration for kindergarten through eighth grade from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parents should bring each child's birth certificate, baptismal certificate (if the child is Catholic), immunization records, Social Security number and custody papers, if applicable.
Ninth-grade orientation
NILES -- NIles McKinley High School, 616 Dragon Drive, will hold an orientation for all incoming ninth-graders and new students and parents at 7 p.m. Aug. 24 in the school cafeteria.
