Pittsburgh Symphonywith Emanuel Ax
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Sir Andrew Davis and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra return to New Castle's Scottish Rite Cathedral April 30 to perform a program that features Emanuel Ax in Ludwig van Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto and works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Richard Wagner and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The 2:30 p.m. concert will open with a Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra premiere: The Lark Ascending, a romance for violin and orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams, rendered by Concertmaster Andr & eacute;s C & aacute;rdenes. Probably one of the most well-known pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams, the music explores the birdsong in the countryside and employs the violin's technical characteristics as well as its singing qualities. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was composed for Leningrad Philharmonic's 25th concert season in 1945, and though it was expected to be the third in a trio of "War Symphonies," Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was infuriated about the work. Instead of writing a heroic and apotheosizing symphony, Shostakovich delivered one of his most satirical and mocking works ever -- and leaves its final evaluation to the audience. After the intermission, Sir Andrew Davis and pianist Emanuel Ax will join forces in Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto. Wagner's overture to his opera Tannh & auml;user concludes the performance. Tickets range from $21 to $63. For more information or to buy tickets, call (800) 743-8560.
