SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO: Some prominent Youngstowners were at opening day in Cleveland in 1931 with Billy Evans, former Vindicator sports editor, who was general manager of the Cleveland Indians. From left, Jack McEvoy, James E. Jones, Police Chief Paul Lyden, Evans, Hugh Wickham and Mayor Joe Heffernan. Evans made his first appearance in Big League baseball 100 years ago, as an umpire in the New York-Boston series in April 1906. He was general manager of the Indians from 1927 to 1935, general manager of the Cleveland Rams football franchise and vice president of the Detroit Tigers. He died Jan. 23, 1956.
