VICE PRESIDENT Alabama university hires former Hubbard resident



FLORENCE, Ala. -- David P. Shields Jr., formerly of Hubbard, has been named vice president for student affairs at the University of North Alabama.
Shields has been the senior director in the division of student affairs at Penn State-Altoona since 1994 and previously served six years as director of student life at the Reed Union Building at Penn State Behrend in Erie.
He will begin work at UNA May 15.
Shields was born in Youngstown and grew up in Hubbard. He has a bachelor of science in applied science degree from Youngstown State University and a master of arts from Green State University. He will complete a doctor of education degree later this year from the University of Pittsburgh.
He has served as a consultant to Johns Hopkins University, Youngstown State University, University of Buffalo, Edinboro University and other institutions. In 2001, Shields received Penn State University's John Beatty Outstanding Chief Student Affairs Officer Award.
He is active in various community organizations.
Shields and his wife, Teryl, who is the manager of Penn State Altoona's Continuing Education Downtown Conference Center, have five children.
