Friday, April 21, 2006

MINERAL RIDGE -- The Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby Association will host the spring "Rally in the Ridge" races Saturday and Sunday.
Races begin at 9 a.m. both days at Seaborn Street, next to Mineral Ridge High School.
Rally races are hosted throughout the country by All-American Soap Box Derby race cities where youths 8 to 17 can earn points in order to qualify for the All-American Rally Championships on July 22 in Akron.
Local racers and other contestants from Pennsylvania and Ohio will be on hand for the competition. Besides earning points, those from the area may use the rally to help gain cockpit time in their racers for this year's local qualifying race June 24 in Youngstown.
The local race dates back to 1934 when Youngstown was one of the original 34 cities in the country to send a local champion to the All-American championships.
