YOUNGSTOWN -- After getting whipped 41-0 by Pittsburgh on Saturday there weren't too many outstanding individual performances by the Youngstown State football team.
However the defense did play much better than the offense and players like Marty Hutchinson, Justin Scholes and Dorian Chenault all played good games for the Penguins.
Hutchinson was named the Hill, Barth and King defensive player of the game against the Panthers.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior linebacker from Newton Falls had five tackles, all of them solo hits, and one tackle for a loss.
"I thought the defense played hard, but we still gave up some big plays which really hurt," he said.
"I played hard and I tried to help us be successful," he added. "We did some good things in the game but we've got to learn from our mistakes."
Scholes, a 6-1, 240 senior defensive end, was named the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive lineman of the game.
The Mentor native finished with two tackles.
Chenault led way
Chenault, a 6-1, 190 sophomore free safety from Canton, was named the Haines Family Player of the Game by the YSU broadcast team.
Chenault finished as the Penguins' defensive leader with nine tackles, five of them solo, and had a forced fumble in the first quarter that stopped a Pitt touchdown drive.
Chenault made a big hit on Pitt tight end Erik Gill at the YSU 4 and Gill fumbled the ball that rolled out of the end zone for a touchback.
Linemen lead offense
Offensively, the winners were a couple of linemen, junior center Ryan Jewell and freshman tight end Derrick Bush.
Jewell, 6-4, 290 from Warren, anchored the YSU offensive line which produced just 152 total yards.
Bush, a 6-4, 250 pounder from Circleville, has seen considerable action in his first season with the Penguins.
The final game award was the Hill, Barth and King special teams player of the game which went to senior Tanner Dunlap of Zanesville.
Excellent punt coverage
Dunlap, the team's long and short snapper on punts and placement kicks, also is usually the first player downfield on the punt coverage.
Against the Penguins he made a nice saving grab on the Joe Bishop punt that was heading into the end zone and tapped it back to be downed at the Pitt 4-yard line.
There was no Wash-on-Wheels Derrick Pixley Hit of the Week selection.
