Officials approve policy against nepotism

Tuesday, September 27, 2005

CANFIELD -- The school board passed a new policy Monday that bans nepotism.
The policy, which bans the hiring of children, siblings, spouses, in-laws or dependents of a board or staff member, passed 4-1. Board member Martha Zarlenga voted against it.
She told the other board members she has received a lot of negative feedback about the policy.
"This is a rather small district," Zarlenga said after the vote. "People that live here generally stay here, or go away and come back and want to work here."
Zarlenga said she does not believe it is right to exclude a job applicant who has a lot of talent.
Zarlenga also said she does not like the way the policy was "rushed through" with no meeting to discuss it.
Superintendent Dante Zambrini noted that even though the policy is official, the board can still have meetings about it and will still be able to revise it.
