Alumni inducted into Hall of Fame

The association is financed annually by donations and membership dues.
NILES -- Seven men will be named by the Niles McKinley Alumni Association to the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.
The dinner and induction will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at Ciminero's Banquet Centre on Main Street.
Tickets are $25 each and can be obtained from Mark Palante, high school principal, (330) 652-9968, or Joyce Mahan, (330) 652-0870.
Those who will be inducted are Dr. Anthony Altiero, Frank Burke, Victor Donnet, Glenn E. Griffiths, Albert A. Salerno and Dennis Salerno, and the late Keith W. Piper.
Amanda Nestor will receive a $500 scholarship from the association that is financed annually by donations and membership dues.
Honorees
Inductees' accomplishments include:
UDr. Altiero, Class of 1939: Retired as a dentist in 1989, having graduated from St. Louis School of Dentistry with postgraduate studies at The Ohio State University and Temple University. A World War II veteran, he is past president of the Lions, Rotary and Niles Alumni. He served on the board of Niles Bank, city park board for 17 years, school board for 20 years and library board for 31 years. He is an avid musician. He and his wife, Lucille, have two children and three grandchildren.
UBurke, Class of 1940: Graduated from Youngstown State University in 1943 and served in the Army until 1945. He worked at Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube Co. and retired from Met Life in 1982. He is a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars and fourth-degree knight of the Knights of Columbus, being cited by the state council for outstanding community work. He was president of the of St. Vincent de Paul, managed its store for 15 years and delivered baked goods for it. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 15 years and was active in Boy Scouts for 42 years, having received the St. George and Silver Beaver awards. He has been involved in a basketball program for children with disabilities and a member of St. Stephen Church for 35 years.
UDonnet, Class of 1935: Attended YSU and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He received his bachelor's degree from OSU and master's in business administration from Case Western Reserve University. He worked at Allied Metals Co. He is a member of St. Stephen Church, serving on its finance committee for 30 years. He served on the Youngstown Catholic Diocesan School Board for 14 years, is active in the K of C, commander of the Niles American Legion and president of the Niles Kiwanis. He also served on a committee to oversee the city's financial recovery.
UGriffiths, Class of 1957: A 1956 and 1957 letterman at the high school, he graduated from YSU with a degree in continuing education. He was president, chief executive officer and board member of Security Dollar Bank. Later, he worked for the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County. He was a trustee of the William McKinley Memorial Library and is a member of YSU Alumni, Niles Historical Society, Playhouse Square Foundation and Trumbull Art Guild. He held offices in the Kiwanis Club and Niles Jaycees. He served in the Army and Army Reserves, and he and his wife, Michelle, have two children and a grandchild.
UAlbert Salerno, Class of 1953: Graduated from St. Joseph's College and received his master's from the University of Akron. He retired in 1997 as president of Clark State Community College, where the performing arts center is named in his honor. He was named Administrator of the Year and Leader of the Year and served on boards at Mercy Medical Center, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts and Clark County Alcohol, Drug Addition and Mental Health. He and his wife, Renee, have four children and nine grandchildren.
UDennis Salerno, Class of 1968: Received his bachelor's degree in 1972 and master's degree in Italian literature and language in 1974 from OSU. He joined the Army in 1975 and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2000. He was assigned to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, three NATO metals and Kuwaiti Liberation Metal. He is currently a senior telecommunications engineer at a NATO ground station. He is commander of the VFW post in Vicenza, Italy, where he lives with his wife, Patricia, whom he married 30 years ago.
UPiper, Class of 1940: Played center for Baldwin Wallace College, where he received his bachelor's degree. He earned his master's degree from Case Western Reserve University. He is a Korean War veteran and was head football coach at Denison University from 1964 to 1992. He was twice named Ohio Coach of the Year. He founded Keith Piper Run, a fitness program, and Big Red Touchdown Club in Licking County. He is a member of the Denison Athletic Hall of Fame, where the football field was named in his honor in 1997. He and his wife had five children and 14 grandchildren.
