Howland girls topple Poland for MAC lead



The unbeaten Tigers stopped the Bulldogs 3-1.
HOWLAND -- Three girls scored a goal apiece as the Howland High soccer team defeated Poland 3-1 Monday to take over sole possession of first place in the Metro Athletic Conference standings.
Allie Airhart scored off an assist from Chelsea Palma and Megan Long played a ball from Melissa Kohn into a goal as the Tigers (8-0-1, 4-0 MAC) went in front 2-0 at the break.
After the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1) cut the lead in half on a goal by Maureen Malone with about 33 minutes to play, Erin Gilmour scored a minute later to give the Tigers the 3-1 lead.
Kelly Storkel assisted Malone and Long got the assist on Gilmour's score.
Poland goalie Samantha Stanich saved 11 shots while Melissa Airhart had three saves in the Howland net.
JVs: Howland, 2-1.
Maplewood 6, Liberty 2
MECCA -- Tori Spencer and Tito Peterson each scored two goals for the Rockets (4-2-3).
Freshmen Ellie Engstrom and Erica Pinko also had goals for Maplewood.
Ashlee Magee and Ester Odor scored for the Leopards.
Fitch 4, St. Vincent-St. Mary 3
AKRON -- Jodi Bowlen scored three goals and Brittney Getz one as Fitch jumped out 4-0.
Getz also had two assists, while Erica Bortnan added a third, while goal keeper Tara Calai had 10 saves for the Falcons (3-3-2).

Canfield 0, North Canton Hoover 0
CANTON -- Canfield outshot Hoover 23-7, but the Cardinals couldn't get anything in the net.
Canfield (6-2-1) got six saves from goal keeper Ashley Hunter, while Hanna Mirzakhani had nine saves for Hoover.
Cardinals defenders Rachael Melewski, Natalie Fox, Dina Camplito and Nikki Sorice all helped keep Hoover scoreless.
Lakeview 2, Champion 1
WARREN -- Megan Charmas scored with five minutes remaining to give Lakeview the win.
Allie Nero had the Bulldogs' first goal on a penalty kick, while Alyssa Baggess, on an assist by Jennifer Rable, scored for Champion (5-3-2, 3-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Lakeview (5-4, 3-0 TAC) also had 10 saves from goal keeper Lindsey Mellatt, while Kelly Dillon had five saves for Champion.
Ursuline 6, Bristol 0
BRISTOLVILLE -- Mariah Snyder and Hannah Snyder had two goals apiece with Kaila Buckley and Katelyn Tondo-Steele each adding a goal for the Irish (4-3-1).
Dana Hinebaugh and Tondo-Steele each had two assists while Mariah Snyder and Dana Miles had one assist apiece for the winners.
Bristol goalie Kylie Robertson stopped 17 shots while Ursuline goalie Jolanta Carkido had five saves. Bristol's record is 3-4-2.
Boys
WARREN -- Jerrod Cooper's goal with an assist from Ed Hazboun snapped a 3-3 tie with 15 minutes remaining in the game, giving Warren JFK a 4-3 win over Maplewood.
Hazboun finished with two goals, while Andrew Barran added one for JFK (4-2-2). Vincent Peluso also had one assist.
Senior forward Dustin Slusher had two goals and senior forward Ryan Bell had one score for Maplewood (4-3-0).
Tyler Perkins had 11 saves for Maplewood, while JFK senior goalie Matt Kokrak had 16 stops.
Hubbard 4, Liberty 3
LIBERTY -- A.J. Pulice had two goals while Rafael Lima had a single goal for the Eagles (4-2).
Brian Sehon, Ryan Karson and Eric Saddle had a goal apiece while Ron Hunkus had two assists for Liberty (3-3-2).
Hubbard took 12 shots at goal while the Leopards attempted 11.

Crestview 4, Lordstown 0
COLUMBIANA -- James Frost scored three times for the Rebels (7-1-2).
Cory Leeson tacked on a goal and three assists. Crestview opened a 3-0 lead at the break.
Lordstown is 2-3-2.
