Ending her service
Army Lt. Col. Diane L. Martino, daughter of Joseph and Betty Martino, has retired after 20 years military service. Her last assignment was as commander of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
Martino, commissioned in June 1985 after earning a bachelor's degree in law administration from Youngstown State University, is a Legion of Merit Medal recipient. Other decorations received during her career include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medals, Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Service Medals and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal.
Martino, who earned a master's degree in public administration from Ball State University, will retire to Poland, Ohio.
PROMOTIONS
Moving up in rank
Naval Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric Reeder was promoted to his present rank while serving as a storekeeper aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. Reeder, a graduate of Poland Seminary High School, is a son of Ed and Vicki Fredericks of North Lima and Richard Reeder of Youngstown. He has been deployed to the Persian Gulf since May 2005, and is scheduled to return to his permanent duty station in San Diego in November.
DEPLOYED
Stationed in Iraq
Army Reserve Lt. Col. Victor Angel, of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of Austintown, is stationed with the Medical Corps at Camp Bucca, Iraq. Dr. Angel, a 1959 graduate of Chaney High School, was activated and sent to Iraq four months ago and is expected to return home early in October. Dr. Angel, who has a private family practice in Cincinnati, is married to the former Delores Dellarco, daughter of Neil Dellarco of Liberty.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Army Pvt. Mattie M. Young graduated from the Power-Generation Equipment Repairer Advanced Individual Training course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Young is the daughter of Lisa M. Burnett of Campbell.

Graduated from course
Daniel T. Christy graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash. He is the son of Karl A. and Marcia D. Christy of Mercer, Pa., and is a 2002 graduate of Mercer Area High School, and a student at Kent State University.
ACADEMY NEWS
Michael J. Muckian, son of Patricia M. and Bernard J. Muckian of New Castle, Pa., recently participated in the U.S. Naval Academy's weeklong summer seminar program in Annapolis, Md. Muckian attends Kennedy Catholic High School, Sharon, Pa.
MISCELLANEOUS
Several area residents serving in the Navy participated in a community relations project at City of Hope, a women's shelter in Jumeirah, United Arab Emirates. They are serving aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsage while deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
They include: Seaman John M. Bukovinsky (Boardman High School, '03), son of Kathy and Harry R. Bukovinsky of Youngstown; Airman Christopher A. Eckley (Lawrence County Vocational Technical High School, New Castle, Pa., '02), son of Kathy Moon of Volant, Pa., and Charles R. Eckley of New Castle; Petty Officer 3rd Class Kuiana J. Quinn (Chaney High School, '01), granddaughter of Alberta L. Booker of Youngstown.
