Hartzell Scholarship surpasses $100,000
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Michael T. Hartzell Scholarship at Youngstown State University has surpassed the $100,000 mark.
Hartzell, 26, a Youngstown police officer, was ambushed and killed on West Federal Street in April 2003.
The scholarship named in his honor is awarded annually to graduates of Austintown Fitch High School (Hartzell's alma mater), children of Youngstown city police officers or children of officers serving the tri-county area in the police or sheriff's departments. YSU students enrolled in the police academy are also eligible.
Hartzell's parents, Howard and Mary Kay Hartzell, presented a $23,000 check to the scholarship fund last week, raising the fund balance to $101,000. The fund is held by the YSU Foundation.
The check presentation was made at a luncheon honoring four YSU students who are receiving $1,000 scholarships from the fund this year.
