Notebook: Maplewood is the top-ranked boys team in Div. III in the state coaches poll, while Salem's boys are fourth and the Quaker girls are second in Div. II. Salem, the defending boys state champions in Div. II, finished second to Walsh Jesuit at last year's regional and return five of its top six runners from last season. McDonald's boys team won last year's regional title en route to the state championship but lost four of its top five runners to graduation. Maplewood finished second at last year's regional despite missing its top two runners: Andy Arnio and Andy Morgan. Morgan missed last week's district race with sore shins but planned to race this weekend. Arnio won a state title in the 3200 meters at last June's state track meet. No area boy has made it to the state meet in Div. I since Boardman's Tom Albani in 2001.
